Description	:	Simon Awtry (sometimes shown as Autry) was 20, and living in Pella, Marion Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. C of the 15th Iowa Infantry on Nov 1, 1861. He was mustered into federal service Dec 31, 1861, and later mustered out of the service on July 24, 1865, in Louisville, Kentucky. During the War, the 15th Iowa Infantry reportedly traveled some 9,985 miles, and took part in 68 battles. Read More	Simon Awtry (sometimes shown as Autry) was 20, and living in Pella, Marion Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. C of the 15th Iowa Infantry on Nov 1, 1861. He was mustered into federal service Dec 31, 1861, and later mustered out of the service on July 24, 1865, in Louisville, Kentucky. During the War, the 15th Iowa Infantry reportedly traveled some 9,985 miles, and took part in 68 battles. During his term of service, he was promoted to 3rd Corporal, then to 2nd Corporal on April 16, 1863, and later to 5th Sergeant on Feb 1, 1864, and then to 4th Sergeant on Aug 15, 1864. Finally, on Jan 28, 1865, he was promoted to 2nd Sergeant. Awtry had become a "Reenlisted Veteran" on Jan 29, 1864. Awtry was severely wounded in his right leg during the Battle of Shiloh (Pittsburg Landing) on April 6, 1862. After the War had ended, he applied for a pension (application #220,713) on June 10, 1876. His pension was granted on certificate #145,210 for which he received $6 a month. After his death, his widow applied for her widow's pension which was also granted. AWTRY, S. P. — Farmer and stock-raiser, Sec. H, P. O. Pella. Was born on the twenty-seventh of April, 1841, in Scott county, Illinois, and was taken from there to Jefferson county, Iowa, by his parents, in 1843. In 1844 he came to this comity, and spent his youth on a farm, attending the common schools. In October, 1861, he enlisted in Company C, Fifteenth Iowa infantry and served three years and ten months. Was wounded at Pittsburg Landing and taken to the hospital, joining his regiment again at Corinth. Was with Sherman on his march to the sea, being mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky, July 5, 1865. In the spring of 1866 he commenced farming and now owns 250 acres of land. He married Miss Margaret Flaugh, in March, 1867. She was born in Guernsey county, Ohio, September 14, 1847. Have six children: Ramson, Oliver, Emmett, Zella, Harry and Lena. Lost one, Cora.
