Mr. Koenig was born Dec. 6, 1892 at LeRoy, the son of Peter and Magdalena Heist Koenig, received his early schooling at LeRoy and continued his education in Sterling schools after the family move to the community. He married Ora E. Dickerson, Dec. 16, 1915 in Sterling. Mr. Koenig entered the U.S. Army in 1917, serving with the 2nd Engineers of the 341st Field Artillery in Germany and France during World War I. He was engaged in numerous battles including Chateau Thierry, Soissons, Pont-A-Mousson, St. Mihiel Salient, St. Etienne-Aisne and Meuse Argonne. Following his discharge from active service, he returned to Sterling and worked as a concrete contractor for many years, retiring in 1958. He owned the Koenig Apartments on Hamilton Streets for several years, selling the apartments in 1980. As a concrete contractor, Mr. Koenig "cemented" his name on many Sterling projects, but it was his activities in the American Legion and youth that his name lingers in the memory of many citizens. He was among those who were instrumental in the construction of the Sterling Memorial Municipal Auditorium - a task that began in the 1930s. One of Mr. Koenig's greatest disappointments was when he learned the auditorium was destroyed by fire, Jan. 17, 1981. Called upon to recall the history of the auditorium, Mr. Koenig wept as he reviewed the early years of the structure, the conventions and events that took place in Sterling's "center of action." Mr. Koenig was among the original Legionnaires involved in the starting and promoting of American Legion baseball and Little League Baseball in Sterling. He served as commander of the Sterling American Legion post No. 20, was a delegate to many state and national conventions, and proudly recalled the famed Sterling American legion Drum and Bugle Corps that performed at several of the conventions, as well as local festivals and parades. He, with many other Legion members, were the "ramrods" of many Logan County Fair activities during the 1930s and part of the 1940s. The members were "marked" by their Orange shirts, trimmed in Blue, with Legion and Fair emblems. He was a member and served as an officer of the Last Squad. Mr. Koenig was a member of First Christian Church, the Sterling B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1336 and he was a 35-year member of the Sterling Volunteer Fire Department before retiring. He is survived by his wife, Ora E. Koenig of Sterling; three sons, Dr. Richard E. Koenig of Sterling, Donald M. Koenig of Sterling and Darrell G. Koenig of Colorado Springs; two daughters, Dora Lea Cobb of Sterling and Margery E. Wamboldt of Denver; a brother, John Koenig of Port Townsend, Wash.; 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Peter grew up speaking German as his parents Ludwig (Lewis) and Elizabeth Koenig had emigrated to Canada from Germany in the 1850s. Always ambitious, Peter apprenticed to a blacksmith at an early age and photos show his powerful chest and shoulders which developed from working the blacksmith bellows. By the time he was twenty, however, his lungs were being badly affected by the smoke of the blacksmith shop and he had to look for another occupation. His physical strength led him to become an apprentice stonemason. Most of the large homes were made of the native grey stone and his work was in great demand. Many of the homes he built in the 1880s are still occupied one hundred years later. In 1882, he married Magdalena Heist and shortly afterward, purchased his father's farm. Peter's brother John had left Canada and had settled in Nebraska a few miles from the first homestead claim in the US. John asked his aging parents to return with him to Nebraska while he and his family were visiting Canada. When John, his wife and 13 children left in their covered wagon for their new home, the elder Koenigs went with them. Thus Peter purchased his father's farm which was the original Royal land grant. The grant had been filed under Lewis King, the Anglican version of Ludwig Koenig. In only a few years the Westward Expansion bug bit Peter also and he and Henry Thurkhorn went to Nebraska to look for homestead land. However, they had arrived too late and all of the land had been claimed. He was advised to look for land around the new town of Greeley, Colorado, but he found the same problem there. The only land available was across the Platte River in the sandhills several miles east of the new town of Sterling. Peter returned to Canada, loaded his belongings including a team of horses in a boxcar and he and his family moved to Colorado. By then, the family included three daughters, Maggie, Lydia, and Emma, and one son, baby Jacob Edward. One can only imagine Magdalena's thoughts as she recalled the plush woods of her Canadian home as she surveyed the endless dry prairie surrounding her new home at LeRoy. This was the third settlement of the area as the rainless summers had driven two earlier sets of homesteaders away. Peter was businessman enough to realize that the only sure money to be made probably wouldn't be from farming, so he opened a general store. The Evangelical Church was central in the lives of the Koenigs as it was in those of most of the settlers of German ancestry. Peter was able to put his earlier training as a stone mason to use when the new stone church was to be built. Although all church services were conducted in German and Peter staunchly read his German Bible, Peter spoke English and he and his brother Will, who had joined the Colorado family, decided to change the pronunciation of the family name from "Kanig" to "Konig," thus making it sound more Anglicanized. The family in Nebraska and in Canada still use the German pronunciation. Each year seemed to bring another child into the family. In the eleven years between 1889 and 1900, five boys and one girl were born. They were Elizabeth, Erwin Henry ("Fat"), Simon Peter ("Sib"), Elroy ("Short"), Clarence and Percy Milton ("Doc"). Then in 1905, Magdalena, expecting her eleventh child, suddenly died. Left a widower with ten children, Peter returned to Canada to seek a wife and mother for his children. When he returned to Sterling, he brought his new wife, Margaret, Magdalena's younger sister, and her twin sons, Clinton and Clayton Astell. In July, 1906, their first son, John Wesley, was born, and eighteen months later in January, 1908, Vergil was born. In 1936, Margaret died and Peter remarried, he was never able to find another woman as kind as Magdalena and Margaret had been. He died May 12, 1948 leaving many descendants. ----- Ora Ellen Koenig, Sib's wife, obituary: Ora Ellen Koenig of Sterling died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1991, at Devonshire Acres in Sterling. She was 98 years old. She was born Feb. 17, 1893, in Chadron, Neb. She was the daughter of James Addison and Flora Anna Anderson Dickerson. Mrs. Koenig came to the Sterling area in 1898 with her family. They traveled in a covered wagon. She received her schooling in a country school in the area. She married Simon P. "Sib" Koenig, December 16, 1915, in Sterling. The couple owned the Koenig Apartments on Hamilton Street for several years, and sold them in 1980. Mrs. Koenig was a charger member of the First Christian Church, and was active in the church. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband June 4, 1988. Mrs. Koenig is survived by Sons Richard and wife Lainy of Oswego, Ore., Donald and wife Bernice of Sterling, and Darrell and wife Lucy of Colorado Springs; Daughter Dora Lee Cobb and husband Bill of Sterling and Marjorie E Wamboldt of Lakewood; and by 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at Chaney-Walters Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Ivan Rundus officiating.
