Description	:	Simon was born to Ude and Johanna (Hamer) Symens. Simon married Engel Poppenga on May 20, 1882. 11 children were born to this union; Oda, Reiner, Reiner, Johannas, Ella J., Kathryn, William, Ida, Minnie, George and Annie. He was born in Marienhafe, Ostfriesland, Germany, and when 14 years old his parents came to this country and settled at Germany Valley, IL. In April, 1881 he came to Dakota and settled on a farm seven miles southwest of Lennox in Turner County, and on May 20, 1882 married Engel Poppenga. They farmed seven miles southwest of here for 11 years and then 21 years continued their rural duties 10 miles southeast of town. In February, 1914 they retired and moved to Lennox. Mrs. Symens was born December 22, 1867 at Waltzaten, Ostfriesland, Germany, her parents— Mr. and Mrs. Reiner Poppenga— coming to the United States in 1868, to Ackley, IA. Mr. Symens passed away December 6, 1936. The six children surviving, namely: Oda, Reiner, Joe, Willie and George Symens, and Mrs. Enno Stratmeyer.
