Description	:	Sivert Alness was born in 1845 in Romsdal, Norway and came to America in 1867. He had worked on a fishing fleet and decided to emigrate rather than enter military service. In Iowa he worked for a farmer who helped him learn English. Later he studied part time at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where he met Karen Skartvedt. Sivert filed for a homestead in Dakota Territory in 1871 and proved up in 1881. Sivert and Karen were married in 1877. Karen managed a post office in her home for the early settlers until the mail could be taken care of in Canton.
