Curd, was born in Calhoun county, Michigan, August 9, 1867, and removed in childhood with her parents to Kentucky, where she resided until grown to young womanhood when she returned to Michigan, where she attended the high school at Hillsdale, after which she entered the sanitarium at Battle Creek, where she remained as a helper for several months, when, with a number of others, she removed to Oakland, Calif., remaining there nearly a year, during most of which time she was employed in the Pacific Press establishment. She came from Oakland to Topeka, Kansas, where she was married to Albert A. Ayres, December 14, 1889, after which she resided with her husband for nearly a year in Winslow, Arizona, when they removed to Nickerson, Kansas, where a son was born to them Februrary 1, 1891, who survives his parents. In April 1891 her husband met death by an accident in the Santa Fe yards at Nickerson. She soon after this event removed to Topeka, Kansas, and then again to Des Moines, Iowa, where she was again married, to James H. Betzer, January 15, 1894, removing to Seward, where she has since resided. She has been in failing health since early last spring, being afflicted with severe nervous trouble caused by a complication of ailments. After a careful diagnosis of her case it was decided that a surgical operation was the only relief from her excruciating suffering, and the operation was skillfully performed on Wednesday, January 16, by Dr. Reynolds, assisted by Drs. Potter, Cummins and Schnitz, but her nervous system was so shattered that she never rallied from the shock. She had a long private talk with the surgeon several days before the operation, and fully understood the danger attending it on account of her weakened and nervous condition, but was anxious and willing to have it done, and made her preparations accordingly. Mrs. Betzer was an earnest and faithful worker in the Seventh Day Adventist church, of which she had been a member a number of years. She delighted in doing kindly acts and helping the needy to the full extent of her ability. She had many friends wherever her lot had been cast. Her funeral took place Sunday afternoon from the family home, and was largely attended by sympathizing friends and neighbors. Elder Farnsworth, of College View, officiated.
