Description	:	When he was 10 years old, he came with his parents to IA from IN by wagon. The trip was 19 days one way. They located in Adams Twp. He was in the Army 47 Reg. IA Inf. Co.-100 days service. Smith Marquis Barr was elected sheriff of Mahaska Co. in 1877 and held office for 4 terms. He married MS Augusta Ballinger from this Co. in 1873. Smith Marquis Barr was elected sheriff of Mahaska Co. in 1877 and held office for 4 terms. He married MS Augusta Ballinger from this Co. in 1873. On January 1, 1886 he was chosen Warden of Anamosa penitentiary.He served as Warden until 1892. Then he worked for the Minneapolis/St. Paul Railway as a claims agent until 1906, when he returned as Warden at the Anamosa Penitentiary until 1911. He then returned to Minneapolis to work for the Railway until his retirement and subsequent death Sepptember 29, 1923. He was the only person to serve two terms as Warden at Anamosa. In his first term, the prison was a rather wild and wooly frontier penitentiary. In his obituary from the Anamosa Eureka October 4, 1923 this text is taken : " Warden Marquis Barr dies..of cancer of the throat...leaving 2 sons and 4 daughters. " He was a genial, big-hearted man who easily made and kept warm friends. In his dealings with prisoners he used methods of persuasion and patience and kindness. His service to the state as an official was one of honest, conscientious effort. His friends in Anamosa were limited only by the bounds of his acquaintance. From the Anamosa Journal October 4, 1923...he was a man of kindly humanitarian feelings in his work for the uplifting of unfortunate prisoners who came under his charge. Mr Barr was the leading spirit in the modern plan of prison discipline. Under his administration the prison became known as the leading institution in the country in the uplifting work of giving the prisoner a chance to make good. He was the friend of thousands of wayward youths who never had a chance until Warden Barr took an interest in them. His interest in boys continued through all the years after his retirement.
