Severseik, pastor of the Lake Whitewood Lutheran church conducted prayer service at the home at 1:30. Mrs T. C. Solem of Hetland sang "I am a Stranger" in the Norwegian language. And at the Lake Whitewood church at 2 o'clock Rev. Severseike took as his text,, Rev. 2-10 "Be thou faithful and I will give thee a crown of life." Floyd Johnson sang "Face to Face and "Praise God This Hour of Sorrow," and Mrs. Solem sang "Behold a Host," accompanied by Phicilla Mydland, Rev. Severseik spoke a few words in the Norwegian language. The many flowers that covered the casket were a silent tribute to her memory. The pall bearers were her three sons, Carl, Selmer, and Alfred Colby and sons-in-law, Oscar Omdalen, Fred Billings, and Claude Phillips. Sophie Larson Colby was born to Lars and Olie Larson at Hoff, Solor Uggarud, Norway, January 17, 1855. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in the church of that community. She was one of 7 children born in this home. Her mother and two sisters died when she was about ten year old and one brother died in Iowa. At the age of sixteen, in 1871, she emigrated to America where later the entire family came. She came to the home of her sister, Mrs. Agnes Johnson near Odebolt, Iowa. She later made her home at different places in this community until July 20, 1880, when she was united in marriage to Lars Colby at Aurelia, Iowa, by Rev. A. Johnson. She continued to live in this community until the spring of 1883 when she with her husband and infant daughter decided to partake of the prairies of South Dakota then Dakota territory. They located on the farm near Hetland which she helped so faithfully develop into the pleasant home which was hers for over 54 years, where on July 20, 1936 she celebrated her 56 wedding anniversary in the presence of children and grandchildren. She went through real pioneer life which meant hard work and many hardships but was always faithful to her home and family. She united with the first church gathering and Ladies Aid and helped give a place of worship and home to anyone who came to speak God's word in the new settlement. As a letter from our pioneer pastor, Rev. L. Thoreson, writes after her death;; "I remember early days when I wandered over the prairie in my early ministry and did not have my own home. I had many homes on the prairie who welcomed me as a son, one of these homes was Colby's. There I was at home, Mrs. Colby was a mother to me and now she's gone to rest and now that she is gone I feel the loss with the family." Bless be her memory. She united with the Lake Whitewood church when it was organized and where she remained a faithful member and attended services until poor health kept her away. To this union were born ten children two dying in infancy and Karen Olivia Larson January 6, 1928. She leaves to mourn the loss of a kind, loving mother, her husband, three sons and four daughters, Mrs. Olga Omdalen, Carl, Selmer and Louise Colby, Lake Preston, who has so tenderly cared for her mother through her long illness, Mrs. Anna Billings, Sioux Falls, Mrs. Mina Phillips, Bruce, S. D., Alfred Colby Brookings, S. D., LeVerne Larson her orphan grandson who always lived in her home, sixteen grandchildren and one great grandchild, two brothers, Peter Larson, Puyallup, Wash., and Lars Larson, Aurora, Ore., two half brothers, Martin of Devils Lake, N. D., and Selmer Larson of Jamestown, N.D., three half sisters, Carrie Christenson, Cooperstown, N.D., Olga Wegner, Seattle, Wash., and Clara Johnson, Stanley, Wis., and a host of friends who mourn the loss of a dear wife, mother and nieghbor. She conversed freely with the father Friday evening during the evening devotion and passed to her reward peacefully at 1 p. m., Saturday, Nov. 14th, at the age of 81 years, 9 months, and 27 days. No one know the silent heartaches Only those who have lost can tell Of the tears that are borne in silence For the one we loved so well.
