In early life he became well versed in the carpenter trade, of which he had been mostly engaged at through life. He was married three times. His first wife was Miss Elizabeth Morris. Five children were born to this union - two sons dying in early life, and three daughters, Mrs William Ogborn, of Cambridge City; Mrs. Dr. Elmer Druley, of bentonville, and Mrs. Frankie Emswiller, of Sioux Falls, S.D. He married for his second wife Mary Waddell. She died while they lived in Kansas. On the 31st of December 1882, he married Mrs. Pheba Sams. To this union a daughter was born, now 13 years of age. The deceased also leaves a wife, one brother and sister, Calvin and Susan Brown. Mr. Brown was a soldier during the civil war, belonging to Company D, Eighth Indiana Infantry. He was in some of the most severe struggles of that terrible war, the most severe of which was the siege of Vicksburg and that noted surprise and memorable retreat under Sheridan at Cedar Creek in the Shenandoah valley of Virginia, the incidents of which he so often would relate. For some six months or more he had been failing both in mind and body. The last month or two of his life he became almost entirely helpless. He was an honest, industrious citizen, a generous neighbor, a kind father and faithful husband. He will, like many others that have passed away, be missed by the many friends with whom he lived sand mingled. Funeral took place Tuesday morning from the family residence, conducted by Rev. Woodruff. Interment in the south cemetery.
