Solomon Elliott was born on December 2, 1819, at Centerville, Wayne Co., Indiana, the fifth of eleven children of Jacob and Mary (Peele) Elliott, both of North Carolina. On September 30, 1841, he married Penelope Morris, of Wayne Co., Indiana, born August 12, 1823, a daughter of Jonathan and Abigail Morris. They had a family of nine children: Franklin; Martin Luther of Jasper Co., Missouri; Emma Florence (Reuben Peele) of Clinton Co., Ohio; Charles M. (d. at 1 year & 10 months); Lindley Murry Hoag of Dudley Twp., Henry Co., Indiana; Laura Cordelia (William Mills) of Dudley Twp., Henry Co., Indiana; Amanda, taught in Clinton Co., Indiana; Anna Mary; and Milo Peele. Solomon lived in Wayne Co., Indiana until 1842, when he came to Henry Co., Indiana and settled on a farm, of 170 acres, in Dudley Township. He was one of the earliest settlers of the township. He was a missionary of the Friends Society in the Indian Territory for four years. He also served three years during the Civil War in Company A, 36th Indiana Infantry; twice he was wounded, at Stone River and Chickamauga, and held prisoner for a short time. He served three years as Township Trustee, and politically, he was a Republican. He and his family were members of the Society of Friends.
