He is a native of Berks County, Pennsylvania, born February 7, 1845, and is the son of William and Hannah (Fidderling) Kohl, both natives of Pennsylvania. In 1855 the family removed to Jones County, Iowa. S.F., was reared a farmer, and received his education in the common schools of the county. During the late civil war he went to his country's defense, enlisting in June, 1863, in the Eighth Iowa Cavalry, and served two years; he participated in the battle of Dalton, Georgia, the campaign of Atlanta, returned to the north with General Thomas to Nashville and started with General Wilson's cavalry troops through Alabama, then was ordered to Macon, Georgia; he was honorably discharged at Macon, Georgia. After the war he returned to Jones County, and December 17, 1867, he was united in marriage to Miss Louisa Grimm, a native of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and a daughter of Abraham and Maria (Guise) Grimm, natives of Pennsylvania. In 1869 Mr. Kohl removed to Iowa County where he resided until 1877, when he came to Shelby County. Here he bought his present farm of J.W. Paulk, which is one of the best in the township; he has a good house, a barn, a grove and an orchard. The farm contains 160 acres. Mr. and Mrs. Kohl are the parents of nine children~~Albert B., Lewis F., Rosa J., Kitty Ann, Charles O., William Henry, Emma May, Wilbur F., and Francis D. Mr. Kohl is a republican, and a member of the G.A.R., No. 197, Harlan. He is a member of the Evangelical church. He takes an active part in the religious and educational enterprises of the county. Fitterling Many Attend Funeral Rites For S. F. Kohl Funeral services for S. F. Kohl were held in the Baptist church of this city at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. 0. A. Fortune. The church auditorium was well filled with friends and relatives of the deceased. Mr. Kohl, who was a civil war veteran, was honored by the members of the local post of the American Legion who acted as pallbearers, and others were present in uniform. The casket was covered with the Stars and Stripes which the deceased helped to defend and preserve. Following the services the body was taken to the Chas. Kohl home where it remained until Sunday morning when it was conveyed in the Marshall funeral car to Harlan, Iowa. accompanied by the members of the immediate family. Funeral services at Harlan, which , were held in the undertaking chapel, were in charge of the American Legion of that city after which Mr. Kohl was laid to rest beside his wife in the Harlan cemetery with full military honors. Solomon F. Kohl was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, February 7, 1845, and passed from this life on January 24, 1935, at the advanced age of 89 years, 11 months and 17 days. At the age of ten he moved with his I parents to Jones county, Iowa, where he grew to young manhood. He enlisted in Company K, 8th Iowa cavalry when 18 years of age. Soon after his enlistment he went south with his company and was engaged in a number of battles, one of which was near Newnan. Georgia, in which 300 men and officers were lost. Following this engagement the company returned to Nashville, Tenn. On August 11, 1865, he was mustered out of the service, receiving an honorable discharge, after which he returned to home in Iowa. On December 17, 1866, he was united in marriage to Louisa Matilda Grimm. In the early seventies he moved with his wife and family to Shelby county, Iowa, locating near Harlan, where he resided until about twenty years ago. Mrs. Kohl passed away on Thanksgiving day, 1909. Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Kohl, all of whom are living except one son, Albert, who died in 1916. The surviving children are: Lewis F. Kohl Willmar, Minn.; Mrs. Rose Hoover, Harlan, Iowa; Mrs. Katherine Plumb, Mrs. Emma Kinsey and Wilbur Kohl, Tilden; William Kohl, Council Bluffs, Iowa; Francis D. Kohl, Fontanelle, Iowa; Mrs. Mabel Simon, Massena, Iowa; and Charles Kohl, Tilden, with whom he was making his home at the time of his death. Early in life Mr. Kohl united with the Evangelical church of which he was an active member for many years. In 1913 he married Phoebe Tague, which union was disrupted by her death in 1917. After his later marriage Mr. Kol1l transferred his membership to the Baptist church of Harlan and upon his removal to Tilden became a member of the local Baptist church. In all of his business and social relations he put into actual practice the principles of true Christianity. During the later years of his life in his hours of meditation he often repeated passages of Scripture and sang church hymns. A few days before his death he repeated a verse from one of his favorite hymns as follows: "Oh, for a heart to praise my God. A heart from sin set free, A heart that always feels his blood So freely spilled for me." Besides his children he leaves two brothers, two sisters, forty seven grandchildren, seventy two great grandchildren and a host of friends. Death Claims Tilden's Last Civil War Veteran S. F. Kohl Dies at Home of Son In Tilden Funeral Saturday At The Baptist Church Solomon F. Kohl, Tilden's last remaining veteran of the Civil War, died shortly after 7 o'clock this evening at the home of his son, Chas. Kohl. Had he lived until the 7th of next month he would have been 90 years of age. He had been in failing health for three or four years but was able to be up and around until about two weeks ago when he became bedfast. Mr. Kohl was a pioneer resident of Harlan, Iowa, coming to Nebraska nearly twenty tears ago where he has since made his home. . He is survived by five sons and four daughters. Two sons and two daughters reside in Iowa, one son in Minnesota and the others at Tilden. One son, Albert, was killed in an auto accident in August, 1916. Funeral services will be held in the Baptist church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, Rev. 0. A. Fortune in charge. The body will be taken to his old home at Harlan, Iowa for burial.
