His son, Jonathan Bradbury Pearson, had this to say about the life in Tennessee when he was a small child: "I was born in Coffee County, Middle Tennessee, April 4, 1861. The Rebel War began on the 12th--so I was four years old when it ended. I remember a lot about it. "My father, Solomon, a strong Union man in the midst of rebels, was in danger, as many other Union men had been hung or shot, their homes burned, families scattered. Our large house, extra heavy doors, were barred at night--guns set at beds, ready in case of attack--fear, trembling--no wonder that I remember." A letter written to John Bacon Crenshaw, prominent Friends minister of Richmond, VA, by Lazarus Pearson on 12-7-1863 about the status of his brother Jonathan, who was then in the Confederate Army, has a note on the back: "My ouldest brother Solomon moved to Tennessee about 1856 he was an unusual strong Union man Will thou pleas while about the prisons in Richmond try and learn if ther are any man ther by the name of Sollomon Pearson from Tennessee. I thought since I left that it might the case that he had bene taken and cared ther with others." This is the only extant contemporary statement about Solomon by a relative. Perhaps this indicates that those who migrated to another state seldom, if ever, wrote to the folks back home. Again Solomon moved at the age of 65 to Oswego, Labette County, in southeastern Kansas, traveling by covered wagon. They arrived 5-8-1870. In due time he purchased land four miles south of Oswego. In 1880 he deeded one acre to the Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church for the sum of fifty cents. "Premises shall be used, maintained, and disposed of as a place of divine worship for the use of the minister and membership." On this spot was built Fletcher's Chapel, which served the community until it was razed in the early 1930's. Solomon Pearson II was a trustee for the land on which the chapel was built. From Mrs. Mable Pearson, the 83 year-old widow of Charles Pearson, his great-grandson, comes the statement that Solomon was a Methodist preacher. Without doubt this means that he was made a local preacher, because he had exhibited a gift in the ministry. In this case he might fill appointments occasionally but never had a church assigned to him. The following biography appeared in William G. Oswego, was born near Goldsboro, N. C., May 20, 1805. When he became of age he engaged in farming and milling, until 1855, when he moved to Middle Tennessee, Coffee County. He was married to Aggie Hannahs, of North Carolina, by whom he had four children - William, died in the army; Elizabeth, deceased; Ichabod, deceased; Sallie, married to John Wiley and living in Kansas. His first wife died November 18, 1834; was married February 26, 1836, to Mary Sauser, of North Carolina by whom he had two children - Phillip A., a minister of the Gospel at McMinnville, Tenn,; Benonay, deceased. His second wife died November 16, 1853. He was married again to Julia A. Talton, by whom he had eight children, - Elizabeth, married to J. A. Kirby, of Labette County, Kan,; Mary J. deceased; John Wesley, Barney, deceased; Ashley G., Jonothan B., Jessie Riece, and Solomon P. John Wesley and Ashley G. own a fine farm on the Neosho River. Mr. P. has brought up three grand-children, two nephews and one orphan girl. Mr. Pearson, Sr., was one of the only three that voted solidly for the Union in his county in 1861; yet the hand that delivers all God-fearing men, delivered him from an awful death, and from the hands of his enemies, and preserved him through the darkest hours of an awful danger. Twice he was in danger of being hung for his Union sentiments in Tennessee, and twice the bushwhackers were hunting him. On April 12, 1870, he emigrated to Kansas, and settled on a farm four miles south of Oswego, where he has been greatly prospered. He and his family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Solomon P. Pearson has three children - Belle S., deceased; Nina A., deceased; and Mary W., living. The following is Solomon Pearson's obituary from an unknown newspaper, kindly shared with me, Bryan S. Godfrey, by his great-granddaughter-in-law, Mrs. Frances McCall Pearson, when I visited her in Indio, California, in 1997: Memoir Solomon Pearson, Sr. died at his residence in triumph of a living faith on Thursday, June 7th, 1883, at 7:30 a.m. Mr. P was a descendant from a line of [cannot read the next line] very true to their country in the last century. Mr. P. was born in Wayne county, North Carolina, May 20th, 1805, where he lived until 1855, when he moved to Coffee county, Tennessee, where he resided until 1870, when he moved to his present location. He has been a devoted husband of three wives, a kind father of fourteen children, and has quite a number of grand children, also a host of friends, whose tribute of respect, willingness to comfort him through all his suffering and to show their regret for his death was almost foundless. The sainted father has shown from his boyhood days traits of true nobility, a conscientious Christian whose influence was felt in every department of life with which he was connected; he was an advocate of religion at home around the family, also in the social circle as well as in the church of God. He was a member of the M.E. church for many years, although being deprived of her means of grace for many months, nevertheless his soul prayed that God might sustain the purity of power of the church, and make her more influential in winning souls to Christ. Through all his suffering he manifested great patience, as well as an unshaken faith in his Savior of whom he spoke so often as having been his rock of defense through all his conflicts in life, and even in the death struggle, he realized that this same Jesus made his dying moments the happiest moments of his life. Father Pearson is gone, but his works remain as landmarks pointing other weary pilgrims to the Lamb of God. He still lives in other lives the [word uncertain] unfold in grander beauty because of contact with his example. He was a friend to the poor, a comfort to the weak, as a father he was wise and firm. He was to his companion as a gift from the Lord. He leaves an aged wife who longs to be at rest with him, and a number of sons and daughters who will never forget we trust his dying advice that they may enjoy that rest in the sweet by and by. His funeral services were held at his residence at 10 a.m. of Friday, June 8th, and attended by many weeping and broken-hearted friends.
