Read More	Mrs. Sophie Elizabeth, wife of Mr. Conrad Beck, was born December 21, 1821, in Prise, Minton, Germany (should be Krois, Minden, Prussia) and died at the family residence in Morning Sun, Iowa, June 19th, 1895, aged 73 years 5 months and 28 days. When about fifteen years of age, she came with her parents to this country. She was married to Conrad Beck in 1842, in Burlington. Nine children were born to them, all of whom with the husband and father survive. They lived in Pleasant Grove township, Des Moines county until the spring of 1876, when they moved to Morning Sun, where they have since resided. Coming to Iowa in the early day, she is therefore classed among the pioneers who self-sacrificing toil, helped to make possible the grand opportunities of later years. In these years of limited opportunities and numerous hardships, she proved herself a worthy help-meet in seconding the efforts of her husband in the accumulation of a large amount of this world's goods. At the same time she was a devoted mother to her children. She taught them to be industrious and frugal and aided them in forming such habits as would be salutary in all future life. In fact she was a model mother, possessing to a large degree those maternal qualities, so that both by precept and by example as well, she became very greatly endeared to her household. By her amiable disposition and winning ways, she was also very popular with all who were privileged to know her. In her, the poor, the sorrowing and the sick all found a true and sympathizing friend who cheerfully responded to their appeals. She was a member of the German Methodist Episcopal church and when health and circumstances would admit, was found in her place in the sanctuary and whom otherwise ordered. She never failed to inquire of the children on their return as to the text and the sermon, and then taking down the old German Bible would read the text, and explain and enforce the truth. For several years she has had the care of her blind and otherwise afflicted husband. To his welfare she was unceasingly devoted until about five weeks since when she was stricken down with paralysis, while in the very act of some service of care. While consciousness and speech remained she continued to manifest her interest in him. Conscious of the approach of death, she was fully prepared for the ordeal. The same simple trust in her Savior so manifest in the vigor of life was not wanting now. Frequently she was want to repent and to have them sing some of her favorite hymns. "All the way my Savior leads me. What have I to ask beside:" The days of childhood prayers and the teaching of Christian parents were revived to memory, as with folded hands across her breast she would repeat "Now I lay me down to sleep." At last the most triumphant hour came, when with the assistance of her loved ones her hands were clasped and her lips uttered for the last time on earth in the name Jesus, "and she was not, for God took her." Beautiful in life and triumphant in death her end was peace. The funeral services were held from the residence on Saturday, June 22nd, at 10:30 a.m., conducted by Rev. G. M. Tuttle of Keokuk, a former pastor and an intimate friend of the family, assisted by Revs. P. J. Henness and J. B. Jackson. Very appropriate music was rendered by the choir of the M. E. church. The floral offerings were exceptionally fine. The grave was beautifully lined and festooned and when the remains were placed therein it presented more the appearance of a bed a rest than of a tomb. A large company were in attendance at the services who joined in testimony that a good woman had been taken from their midst.
