Mrs. Behnfeldt, who had been in failing health for some time, passed way on the morning of December 21 at the Phillips County Hospital here. She entered the hospital on December 13. Mrs. Behnfeldt was 82 years of age. The oldest of 11 children of Herman and Catherine Langhope Holers, Mrs. Behnfeldt was born October 16, 1867, and was confirmed and became a member of the Lutheran church on April 2, 1882. On November 2, 1893, she was united in marriage to Henry F. Behnfeldt at Okolona, Defiance County, Ohio. To this union four children were born, three of whom survive. Shortly after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Behnfeldt moved to their farm near Sherwood, Ohio, where they resided for 13 years. In 1906 they and their two children moved to Phillips County and established their home on a farm 10 miles southeast of Holyoke. This is now the David Masten farm. At that time there was a two-room sod house on the place in which they made their home for several years. They then purchased more land southeast of Holyoke, the place now owned by the Vern Smiths, and moved there, improving the farm and residing there until 1918 when they moved to Holyoke. Mrs. Behnfeldt experienced the hardships of pioneer life, but she took an active part in community affairs and was particularly active in the work of her church. Mr. and Mrs. Behnfeldt were charter members of Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke, helping to organize the church in 1907. Mrs. Behnfeldt saw the congregation grow from a membership of less than a dozen to its present size. She was among those who helped to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the church. In addition to rearing her own family, Mrs. Behnfeldt found time to help others and had three other children in her home for several years. These three are Catherine (Mrs. Barnard) Jordon and Elton Smaller, both of Dacono, Colorado, and Leta (Mrs. S.G.) Palmer, Livermore, California. Survivors include one son, Otto H. Behnfeldt, Tulsa, Oklahoma; two daughters, Mrs. Verna B. Beck, Mountain City, Nevada, and Geneva (Mrs. Harry P. Hassler), Holyoke, with whom Mrs. Behnfeldt had made her home for a number of years; one brother, George C. Holers, Denver; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Meyer, Fort Wayne, Indiana and Mrs. Katie Kluth, Napoleon, Ohio; eight grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Preceding Mrs. Behnfeldt in death were her husband, who passed away on October 8, 1934; one daughter, Erna, who died in infancy; her parents, four brothers and three sisters. Relatives from a distance who were here for the funeral were Mrs. Verna Beck, Mountain City, Nevada; Otto H. Behnfeldt, Tulsa, Oklahoma; Mr. and Mrs. Verdis D. Finch and sons, Billy Charles and Zane, Gunnison; Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Beck Jr., Great Bend, Kansas; George C. Holers and Mr. and Mrs. Erwin A. Anderson, Denver, and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Blystone, New Raymer. Out of town friends here for the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rush, Haxtun; Mrs. Amelia Gill and Mrs. Naomi Robb, Big Springs, Nebraska, John, Anna and Reka Kluth, Julesburg, and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schroeder, Venango.
