Sandi was born June 1, 1923, at Temvik, the daughter of Jacob and Emelia (Pietske) Merkel. She grew up in Bismarck and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1941. She attended Bottineau School of Forestry at Bottineau. She moved to San Francisco, Calif., and worked at the Presidio, where she met her husband-to-be Dewey D. Thomason. After World War II, they returned to Bismarck and they were married April 21, 1946, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. Sandi and Dewey celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Zion Lutheran Church in April 1996. In 1947, Sandi and Dewey lived in Medora, and were proprietors of the Log Cabin Bar and Cafe. They moved to St. Paul, Minn., in 1955 and lived there until 1965. At that time they returned to Bismarck where they made their home for the next 32 years until their recent retirement to Ankeny, Iowa, in 1997. Sandi worked as Dewey's secretary for the 37 years that he was a New York Life Insurance agent. Sandi enjoyed gardening, reading and sewing. She was an avid book collector and had gathered a collection of over 5,000 books. She had researched and documented the genealogy of her families. She enjoyed traveling and visited many areas of the United States, and also traveled in Europe. She was a member of Zonta International of Bismarck, North Dakota Historical Society of Germans from Russia and the VFW Auxiliary of Mendota, Minn. Sandi is survived by her husband, Dewey D. Thomason; one son and daughter-in-law, David C. and Deborah Thomason, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, JEanne and Clay Wright, Ankeny, Iowa; one granddaughter and her husband, Raedean and Ken Naylor, Streeter; two grandsons, Dustin and Casey Wright, Ankeny; three brothers, Louis Merkel, Rapid City, S.D., and Herman and Arthur, Merkel, Bismarck; and four sisters, Emma Baken, Santa Ana, Calif., Minnie Grafing, Hibbing, Minn., Cari Steingrubber, Hebron, and Christina Beba, Ephrata, Wash. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Emelia Merkel; and five brothers, John, Jake and Christ Merkel, and Henry and Felix Knittel.
