SOPHIA SHARP KIRK, OF BUTLER COUNTY IS ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD Born one hundred years ago on November 19, 1809, under southern skies, in Murrey [sic] county, Tennessee, Mrs. Sophia Sharp Kirk, celebrated her one hundredth birthday Friday, November 19, 1909, in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jacob Reed, in Flint Ridge, Butler county, Kansas. Through a century of all the hardships that go with the life of a pioneer wife and mother. Mrs. Kirk reached her hundredth birthday active physically and interesting mentally, and with the ambition and energy that became a part of her during the days of war, of struggle and privations for her family, she "steals a march" on those who would in her later days keep her in idleness and luxury, and accomplishes all the real work she can do. Her indomitable industry and will never flags and she is happier when working. Sophia Sharp was married to William Kirk, March 20, 1829 and to them were born six children. The husband died fifty-two years ago, before the civil war. One son, Monroe, enlisted in the union army in the civil war and was killed in the service of his country. The remaining five children survive; they are: Mrs. Martha Quest, El Dorado; Mrs. Josephine Reed, Mrs. Sarah Winn and Mrs. Katharine Wilkinson, Flint Ridge; Mack Kirk, Mansfield, Missouri. Mrs. Kirk moved with her family from Tennessee to Illinois in 1855 and came to Butler county in September, 1872. They first located in Chelsea township. Mrs. Kirk spun and wove and kept her family together in comfortable circumstances until all were married. Since 1873 she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Jacob Reed. And this home was the scene of the remarkable birthday anniversary celebration; one hundred and thirty-five guests gathered for the occasion and they were royally entertained while making the day glad for the hostess. Music, laughter and reminiscences made the day brief. The guests were all seated at one great table, decked in red and white cut flowers.
