Description	:	Sophie Lee Shuler Varn, of Smoaks, SC, wife of William Henry Varn, Jr., entered into Heavenly rest on the afternoon of March 5, 2013. Mrs. Varn was born in Holly Hill April 1, 1921 a daughter of the late Viola Aletha Mackintosh and Medicus Ellie Shuler. She graduated from Columbia College in 1943 with a BA in English and later became a journalist for both the Press and Standard and the Advertiser Herald. Mrs. Varn was an active member of her community, belonging to many social groups and having served on many boards and commissions including: the Board of Directors... Mrs. Varn was born in Holly Hill April 1, 1921 a daughter of the late Viola Aletha Mackintosh and Medicus Ellie Shuler. She graduated from Columbia College in 1943 with a BA in English and later became a journalist for both the Press and Standard and the Advertiser Herald. Mrs. Varn was an active member of her community, belonging to many social groups and having served on many boards and commissions including: the Board of Directors of the Colleton County Memorial Library, the Board of Directors of Enterprise Bank, the Daughters of the American Revolution Col. Joseph Glover Chapter, the Mary Debow Rich Garden Club, the Jeudi Study Group, the Colleton County Rice Festival Board, and the Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society. She was an active member of the Smoaks Baptist church, and was a devoted wife mother and grandmother. Mrs. Varn enjoyed spending time outdoors with flowers and wildlife and she loved to listen to music and play the piano, as well as paint. She was a wonderful cook and spent many hours reading good books and writing. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children: Eugene Muller "Gene" Varn, William Henry Varn, III (Tracy) and Janice Lee Varn Avant (Andy); six grandchildren: Lauren Varn Myers (John), Philip Colin Varn (Shannan), William Henry Varn, IV (Brandi), Kendall Taylor Varn (Marie), Elizabeth Shuler Avant and Eric Andrew Avant; and five great grandchildren: Sophie Lee Varn, Philip Colin Varn, Jr., John Andrew Myers, Michael Joel Myers and Kendall Taylor Varn, Jr. Mrs. Varn was preceded in death by four sisters: Mary Eugenia Shuler Peele, Virginia Shuler League, Emily Shuler Nelson and Viola Elizabeth Shuler and by three brothers: William Wayne Shuler, Medicus Ellie Shuler, Jr. and David Mackintosh Shuler. Funeral services will be held March 8, 2013, at 2:00 in Smoaks Baptist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery.
