Friends called Monday, Dec. 26 from 4-6 p.m. at Roble Funeral Service in Spring Grove, Minn., and one hour prior to services at the church Tuesday. Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 27 at 1 p.m. at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah with Pastor David Andreae offi-ciating. Burial was in the Big Canoe Cemetery. Military rites were provided by V.F.W. Post No. 1977 in Decorah. Sophus (Stoney) Cornelius Stoen was born Jan. 18, 1923 in Spring Grove, Minn., to Henry and Martina (Sollien) Stoen. He was a lifelong area resident, attending rural school. He was in the United States Navy from January 1941 to 1946. March 30, 1947, he married Palma "Polly" Engan at Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church, rural Dorchester. He had worked as a trucker, he and his wife farmed for a short time, and until his retirement he had worked as a foreman for Win-neshiek County. He was a member of Big Canoe Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, where he had served as trustee, and with his wife as custodians. Survivors include his wife, Palma "Polly" Stoen of Decorah; four sons: David (Dorothy) Stoen of Decorah; Larry Stoen and Randy (Stephanie) Stoen, both of Highlandville and Jim (Lori) Stoen of Spring Grove; three daughters: Linda (John) Miller of Corydon, Iowa; Diane Reategui of Port Richie, Fla., and Bonnie (Dwight) Nichols of Highlandville; 21 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Raymond (Darlene) Stoen of Decorah and Herbert Stoen of Highlandville; one sister, Thelma Ellingson of Hesper. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Dustin Stoen; his sister-in-law, Katherine Stoen and his brother-in-law, Ervin Ellingson. Decorah Newspapers December 27, 2005
