Crumbaker and family had moved to Illinois from Ohio and settled in the community in McLean County. William and Margaret Piper Crumbaker were the parents of twelve children, two of whom died in infancy (Elizabeth and William). The children that grew to adulthood were Marion, John, Sarah, Maria, Oliver, Samuel, Johanna, Jonas, Margaret and Alice. In this same community lived a couple by the name of Patton. The Pattons employed extra help, thence the meeting of Spear Smith and Sarah Crumbaker. The Pattons approved of both young people and when in 1870, the young couple married, they continued to live on the Patton farm and work for them. The four older children were born in the years that followed. In the spring of 1883 the family moved by covered wagon to Audrain County, Missouri. In the fall of 1883 because of the exceedingly poor school facilities and drought, the family went back to Illinois by train in time for the opening of school. Another son and daughter had become members of the family before leaving Illinois again in 1889. This move took them to Nebraska, settling in Colfax County, near Schuyler and 1892 Winnie Maria joined the family. In 1896 they moved to a farm near Leigh, Nebraska and 1903 they again moved to Boone County, purchasing a farm south of Albion. This farm is where they were residing at the time of Spear Spencer's death. * By this time all of the children except Leonie and Winnie were married and a few years after Spear's death, Sarah and the two daughters moved into the town of Albion. * I recall seeing him on his bier in the living room. He had a beard. Obituary from the Albion newspaper dated Thursday, September 22, 1921: The funeral of S. S. Smith, whose death occurred September 13th, was held from the Methodist church Sunday afternoon and the respect by which he was held was testified to by the large concourse of friends who gathered for this service. The service was conducted by Reverend G. H. Main and interment made in Rose Hill Cemetery. Spear Spencer Smith was born August 19, 1944, in Floyd county, Indiana, and died September 13, 1921, at his home near Albion, aged 77 years, and 25 days. He was the son of George R. and Minerva Smith. His father died when he was only thirteen months old. His mother moved him to McLean county, Illinois, in 1858; and here his boyhood days were spent and he grew to young manhood. He enlisted in April 1862, before reaching the age of eighteen, in Company C., 94th, Illinois Volunteer Infantry and served throughout the war, being honorably discharged with the rank of first sergeant. He returned to McLean county and engaged in farming and on February 10, 1870 was united in marriage to Sarah C. Crumbaker. To them were born the following children: Leonie M. Smith, Mrs. L. E. Jacobsen, A. C. Smith, M. O. Smith, R. R. Smith, Mrs. Earl Gilmer and Winnie Smith. His wife and all the children with the exception of Mrs. Gilmer, together with eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren survive him. In 1888 Mr. and Mrs. Smith and family moved from Illinois to Colfax county, Nebraska, and in 1903 they moved to the present home near Albion. An orphan lad, his boyhood life was one of hardship, but possessing a spirit that could not be and never was discouraged, and a fine sense of justice, he over came all obstacles and his life was that of a true, loyal, American, Christian gentleman. He was converted in 1880 and his life has left its everlasting Christian influence not only on his family but upon all with whom he came in contact. He lived a long, useful and helpful life. He will be missed and never forgotten. He is at rest enjoying the fruits and benefits of a well life. No better words can be found to describe his life than those found in 1st Peter, third chapter and fourth verse: "But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit which is in the sight of God of great price."
