SP4 Robert Wake Miles, 21, of Hays, Route 1, was killed in Vietnam on Wednesday, October 2. Army representatives visited the home of his parents, Mr and Mrs Garnis Miles, and wife, Mrs Ruby Sidden Miles, of Hays Route 1, on Saturday, carrying the news of the soldier's death, which resulted from an explosion of a land mine placed by the Viet Cong. SP4 Miles was a member of a reconnaissance group in a unit of the Ninth Infantry Division in Vietnam. He was born in Wilkes County April 22, 1947, son of Garnie and Zelma Adams Miles. He graduated at North Wilkes High School in 1965 and attended the Deisel School of Forsyth Technical Institute in Winston-Salem, after which he was employed at the Service station of Holly Farms Poultry in Wilkesboro. He entered the Army on July 19, 1967, and received basic training at Fort Bragg, after which he received advanced training at Fort Polk, La., before going to Vietnam. He was a member of New Covenant Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs Ruby Sidden Miles; his parents, Mr and Mrs Garnia Miles; and two brothers, Paul Miles of Pfafftown and Richard Miles of Bakersville. The body will be returned here for funeral and burial services. FUNERAL SET SUNDAY FOR SOLDIER KILLED IN VIETNAM COMBAT, Thursday, October 10th, 1968. Funeral services for SP4 Robert Wade Miles, 21, of Hays, Route 1, soldier killed in Vietnam on October 2, will be conducted on Sunday, October 13, at 2pm at New Covenant Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery. The body will be taken to the home of his parents, Mr and Mrs Garnie Miles, at 1pm Saturday, and will be placed in the Church one hour before the the service. The Reverend Boyd Caudill, Fred Dillard, Harvey Mathis and Ivan Dameron will conduct the service. He was the husband of Mrs Ruby L Miles, Route #1, Box 169, Hays, NC. He served with Echo Company, 3rd Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, "Old Reliables", USARV. He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, the Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
