Mr. Tourtellot was born in Dundee, Illinois, and moved to Wyoming, Iowa, when eighteen years of age and engaged in the mercantile business with his father. Later he entered the insurance business, continuing in it for a period of over fifty years. Hopkinton has been his home since January, 1873. He was a student at Lenox College before his marriage. From early manhood he was a believer in Christ and united with the Presbyterian church at Hopkinton. On coming to Hopkinton he united by letter with this church and in later years was chosen to the office of deacon and trustee, which position he occupied until his death. Mr. Tourtellot’s parents were Stephen Tourtellot and Eleanor McClure. ON the parental side he was descended from the French Hugenots and on the maternal side the family was closely identified with Revolutionary persons and events. General George Washington was a frequent visitor at the hold homestead on the Hudson River. He was one of a family of four brothers and four sisters. Miss Jennie Tourtellot of Wyoming is the only one left. Mr. Tourtellot was united in marriage to Miss Ruth A. Loomis at Wyoming, Iowa, on February 1, 1865. Their golden wedding anniversary was pleasantly celebrated in 1915. They were the parents of seven children, Rev. George M. of Hudson, Wisconsin; Rev. J. C. of Rowley, Iowa; Edward B., Bismark, N.D.; Mrs. Lucy Greer, Akron, Ohio; Mrs. Jennie Austin, Austinville; Mrs. Mildred Calhoun, Worcester, Mass.; and Mrs. Eleanor Morgan, Boston, Mass. Those from a distance able to attend the funeral were George, Chester, Mr. and Mrs. Austin and daughter Ruth. The services were held Friday afternoon at the home, conducted by Dr. W. H. Ensign. The body was taken to Wyoming for interment. Mrs. Tourtellot and children wish to express their deep gratitude to the many friends for the tokens of love and esteem received at this time and during the illness of Mr. Tourtellot, tokens that he loved so well and that cheered many a weary day.
