Williams had passed away at his home there at 1:30 o’clock that afternoon. He was taken ill several months ago and everything possible was done to save his life. He first went to the Mayo Hospital at Rochester, Minnesota, where the seriousness of his malady was first realized. Later he went to Chicago and was treated by eminent specialists there and seemed to improve. He also went to the sanitarium at Battle Creek, Michigan, but a short time ago returned home and it was seen that he was rapidly growing weaker and that no hopes of his permanent recovery could be entertained. The funeral services were held from the home at 2:00 o’clock and from the Madrid Christian church at 2:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon and the remains laid to rest in the family lot in the Madrid cemetery. Squire B. Williams was born in Boone County, May 13, 1860, and had spent his entire life here. His parents Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Williams having settled in Boone County in 1847. Squire B. Williams was reared and educated on his father’s farm but shortly after reaching man’s estate he left the farm and engaged in the livery business in Madrid which he conducted for four years. He was then appointed postmaster at Madrid by President Cleveland and filled the office for four years with honor and distinction. He then embarked in the grain business with the McFarland Company and continued with them for a number of years. In August 1900, he purchased a well-established independent business and had conducted the business successfully until his death. He was a stock holder in the Madrid State Bank and was recognized as one of the most substantial and progressive businessmen of the county. September 29, 1883 he was united in marriage with Miss Blanche Billsland, daughter of another of the well-known pioneer families of the county. She with two daughters, Mrs. Edna Parsons of Des Moines and Miss Dorothy, at home, survive to mourn his untimely death.
