Rita Elizabeth Heimes was born Nov. 21, 1921, to Anon and Frances (Hochstein) Heimes on the family farm near Wynot. After completing elementary education, she assisted with work on the farm until she entered Sacred Heart Monastery in September 1944. She made her first profession as Sister Elaine June 24, 1946, and celebrated her golden jubilee in 1996. Her entire ministry has been in food service. After four years as food service director for Mount Marty College and a year in the Bishop's house in Sioux Falls, she began a 45 year career as cafeteria supervisor at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton. Her certification as food service supervisor resulted from correspondence courses in food service supervision, sponsored by the American and South Dakota Dietetic Associations and summer institutes sponsored by the Catholic Health Association of Fontbonne College, St. Louis, Mo. She enjoyed traveling, especially a trip to Rome, Italy, and Germany in 1975. She had been an infirmary resident since 1996. She is survived by her Benedictine community; two sisters, Ursula Kathol, Hartington; and Sister Frances Ursula, Maple Mt., Ky; two brothers, Ignatius, Hartington; and Hubert, Coleridge; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and six brothers.
