A wake service will be held Sunday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m., and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am, May 11 in Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Gladys Agnes Hunhoff was born August 21, 1918, in rural Yankton County to Herman and Mary (Huber) Hunhoff. She was the second-oldest of seven children. Her birth came during the Flu Epidemic of 1918 and her mother was critically ill from the flu following her birth. As a child she helped with the work on the family farm and attended a rural school near by. She then attended Mount Marty Academy graduating in 1936. While at high school the example and companionship of her instructors were instrumental in nurturing her vocation to the Benedictine way of life. She entered Sacred Heart Monastery on June 21, 1936, and was invested as a novice the following year receiving her baptismal name as her religious name. She made first profession in 1938 and her perpetual profession in 1941. Her ministry included teaching elementary and secondary students and then many years in administration at Mount Marty College; St. Thomas More Hospital and Fremont National Bank in Canon City, CO; El Pomar Center, Colorado Springs; the Benedictine Health System of Yankton and Sacred Heart Monastery. She also served in music ministry in Canon City, CO at four different congregations. S. Gladys earned degrees from the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, MN; University of South Dakota and the University of Iowa. Sister Gladys was a gracious woman of hospitality who had an artistic talent for creating beautiful environments for the liturgy, for meals, receptions, and other festive celebrations. Sister Gladys is survived by her Benedictine community; three sisters: S. Phyllis Hunhoff OSB, Mary Lois Gibson, and JoAnn Sallee; one brother, Ed (Catherine) as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Helen; and brother, Herbert. Yankton Press & Dakotan
