Mary Susan Dunn was born in White Lake July 13, 1914, to Peter and Catherine (Hanten) Dunn. Her early acquaintance with the Yankton Benedictines was at St. Peter's School in White Lake, which she attended for eight years. After high school graduation in Plankinton, she worked at home for three years and at the local post office for one year. In September 1936, she entered the Yankton community and made monastic profession June 24, 1938, as Sister Jean Marie. Prior to her novitiate she attended Mount Marty Junior College for a year, and after professing her long-time wish to be a nurse was realized as she entered Sacred Heart School of Nursing, graduating with an R.N. in 1941. Her active ministry for more than 54 years included serving as school nurse at Immaculate Conception School, Stephan; nursing and supervision at St. Thomas More Hospital, Canon City, Colo.; Avera Sacred Heart, Yankton; and Madonna Home, Lincoln, Neb. From 1972-95 she ministered as charge nurse, patient visitor and in charge of central supply at Avera St. Benedict Health Center, Parkston. Her constant comment was "I enjoyed my work there," no matter the location. She is remembered for her gentle, kind and prayerful spirit, as well as her enthusiastic following of sports events, especially the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Minnesota Twins. She was an avid reader, an interest acquired early in life from the example of her parents. She is survived by her Benedictine Sisters; a brother, Edward, San Antonio, Texas; a sister-in-law, Marie Dunn, Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews.
