Theresa Foerster was born on November 20, 1897, the third of a family of twelve children, on a farm two miles south of St. Helena, Cedar County, Nebraska. Four boys and seven girls grew to adulthood. When Tresa was 13 years old the family moved to a farm 2 miles southwest of Parkston, South Dakota. Here Theresa and her brothers and sister attended Catholic School. Theresa Foerster was born on November 20, 1897, the third of a family of twelve children, on a farm two miles south of St. Helena, Cedar County, Nebraska. Four boys and seven girls grew to adulthood. When Tresa was 13 years old the family moved to a farm 2 miles southwest of Parkston, South Dakota. Here Theresa and her brothers and sister attended Catholic School. Sister Luke stated in autobiography, "as far back as I can remember, in my earliest childhood, I wanted to be a Sister. At 12, I was determined to enter the Franciscan order, but was told I was too young. Later I longed to be a foreign missionary, but my parents seemed to need me until I was seventeen. Then I decided I just could not wait any longer. Our pastor, Father Dahlmans, then took me to see the profession ceremonies at Yankton and that helped me decide where to enter. I could hardly wait till my mother had my sewing done. The the parting seemed hard anyway, but my mother must have felt it the most. She later said, "It could not have been worse had you died." Theresa entered the convent on October 6, 1915. Four years later a younger sister, Laura (Sister Marcella Foerster) followed her. Sister Luke spent many of her years in the Denver and Pueblo, Colorado region, teaching and recuperating from tuberculosis. Sister Luke was assigned to teach at Holy Trinity/Cedar Catholic in Hartington, Nebraska four time, 1943/44, 1955/57, 1964/65 and again in 1969/75. Sister Luke, just three years later, on September 7, 1978 would enter eternal life.
