A wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 22, 2014 and a Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 23 at 11:00 a.m., both in Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel in Yankton. Ruby Evelyn Kranz was born September 30, 1919 the seventh of nine children to Michael and Mary (Raml) Kranz of Kranzburg, SD. She attended Holy Rosary School graduating in the eighth grade and Public High School in Watertown, SD. She graduated from Watertown Commercial College in 1938 and worked as a stenographer at a Watertown business. After taking Civil Service examinations, Ruby became one of the first occupants in the Pentagon Building in 1942. Ruby entered Sacred Heart Monastery in November 1943. She received the name Marie as a novice and made first profession on June 24, 1945. S. Marie attended Mount Marty Junior College, Yankton, SD for two years and graduated in 1948 from Marymount College, Salina, KS. She also made her final profession June 24, 1948. After taking classes during the summers, she received a master's in English from St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO in 1954 and a doctorate in English at Catholic University, Washington, D.C. S. Marie spent her life teaching in Hartington, NE, O'Gorman High School in Sioux Falls, Mount Marty High School, and Mount Marty College in Yankton, SD. While at Mount Marty College, she was appointed Director of the Learning Center. Here she was especially attentive to Native American students and those from foreign countries. Humble in mentioning her successes, she was dedicated to her students and untiring in her persistence to help them succeed. Even after retiring from Mount Marty College, she tutored international students as she was able. A highlight of her professional career was teaching a semester at Sogang University in Seoul, Korea. S. Marie is survived by her Benedictine community and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and eight siblings.
