Description	:	Sister Mary George Shoemaker, OSF, died July 1999, at Marian Residence in Alliance, Nebraska. She was born (Mary Lenore Shoemaker) on July 5,1909 to George and Ellen (Joyce) Schoemaker. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1927 and entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity at Stella Niagara, NY, in February of 1929 and made her vows on August 30,1931. Her first teaching assignment was at the Mother House, then the normal school and Sacred Heart Academy in Buffalo, NY. Read More	Sister Mary George Shoemaker, OSF, died July 1999, at Marian Residence in Alliance, Nebraska. She was born (Mary Lenore Shoemaker) on July 5,1909 to George and Ellen (Joyce) Schoemaker. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1927 and entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity at Stella Niagara, NY, in February of 1929 and made her vows on August 30,1931. Her first teaching assignment was at the Mother House, then the normal school and Sacred Heart Academy in Buffalo, NY. In Charleston, VA, she taught eigth grade and also at St. Peter's School in Columbus, Ohio. From 1938 until 1940, she was at St. Mary's Academy in O'Neill and then on to Minot, SD until 1942. She taught one semester at St. Frances Mission in South Dakota. Before returning to O'Neill in 1945, she received her bachelor's degree from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa. Sister taught commercial classes at St. Mary's until 1960 and at St. Agnes Academy in Alliance. Then she returned to St. Mary's, becoming the grade school principal for five years. From there, she taught commercial classes at the St. Mary's High School until she retired in 1988. She taught for 57 years. Sister George remembered back in the 1940's when there wasn't any money to buy new typewriters, so she had to repair the old ones by using baling wire. If ever she did get a new one, there were no extra tables to put them on, so she, with the help of the boys, would take board and place them between two tables. Sister will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
