Description	:	Sister Ursula Mitzel OSB, 101, died Tuesday, July 3, 2007, in the Sacred Heart Monastery Care Center following a lengthy illness. A wake service will be held July 4 at 7:30 p.m. and the Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on July 5 in Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the monastery cemetery. Elizabeth Mitzel was born March 6, 1906, at Strasburg, North Dakota, the 10th child of German Russian immigrants Andrew and Veronica (Schmidt) Mitzel. She attended elementary school in Strasburg. As a teenager she felt called to the religious life while still enjoying the social activities of the day including "dances, parties, basket socials and car riding." She even danced with native Strasburg celebrity, Lawrence Welk. In July, 1926 she left by train for Yankton to join Sacred Heart Monastery. After two years as a candidate, she became a novice in 1928, made first profession in 1929 and final profession in 1935. She completed her high school education at Mount Marty High School and nurse's training at Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing. Her ministry included over 40 years as a nurse in several of the community's hospitals, being among the first sisters at St. Benedict Hospital in Parkston and St. Michael's Hospital in Tyndall. She also served 15 years at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, including several years as supervisor of the pediatric department, and later as Benet Home receptionist. Sister Ursula was a gentle woman with a ready smile and twinkle in her eyes. Always eager to serve, even the effects of Alzheimer's disease did not deter her from "making rounds" to check on the needs of others. She was loved by her family, thirty of whom traveled to Yankton to help celebrate Sister Ursula's 100th birthday in March, 2006. Sister Ursula is survived by her Benedictine community and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and nine siblings. Yankton Press & Dakotan
