| Description | : | Staff Sergeant Smith served with the 360th Bomb Squadron, 303rd Bomb Group (Heavy), 8th Air Force in World War II. He was a top turret gunner aboard U.S. Army Air Corps B-17G Flying Fortress #42-97893, nicknamed "Minnie the Moocher." On a bombing mission from Molesworth, England to strike targets over Magdeburg, the crew came under attack by enemy aircraft, causing them to crash in Schladen, near Homburg, South of Brunswick, Germany.
