Lowell Franz Tieszen was born April 16, 1918, to Henry and Jeanette (Miller) Tieszen at Blaine County, Montana, near Chinook, on a farm which had been recently homesteaded by his parents. Due to successive crop failures, the family moved back to Marion, South Dakota, where much of Henry Tieszen's family was located. Lowell graduated from Marion High School in 1935. In 1941, Lowell was drafted into the U.S. Army in Sioux Falls, where he was employed by Morrell's. When World War II broke out, Lowell was sent to North Africa and stationed in Casablanca, Morocco, where he remained for the duration rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon his return from the war, Lowell was hired on with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Pickstown, South Dakota, as Ft. Randall Dam was under construction. Lowell was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict and spent a year in Japan and Korea. He returned to Pickstown after his tour of duty and resumed employment with the Corps. On June 19, 1955, he married Evelyn Kirchhevel and transferred to the Gavins Point project in Yankton. Lowell retired in 1974 with over 30 years of combined government service and employment. During his retirement years, Lowell kept busy with numerous activities. He served on the Board of Directors of the Farmers State Bank in Marion for eighteen years. He also volunteered for and served in a variety of capacities for the United Church of Christ. Lowell spent countless hours volunteering in his neighborhood doing yard work and other odd jobs for the elderly and handicapped. He was also involved in the VFW and Elks Lodge. Lowell will be remembered as a devoted family man to both his immediate and extended families. Since childhood, family gatherings were his favorite activity. He traditionally arrived for picnics in the park carrying a batch of Evelyn's potato salad and a cooler of lemonade. Lowell is survived by two sons: Doug Tieszen of Encampment, WY, and Duane (Carmen) Tieszen of Mission Hill; four grandchildren: Ben (Cori) Tieszen of Billings, MT, Allison Tieszen of Encampment, WY, Chelsea Tieszen of St. Paul, MN, and Chris Tieszen of Mission Hill; two sisters: Harriet Botelho of Juneau, Alaska and Ruth (Henry) Schoon of Sioux Falls; and one brother Dale (Ella) Tieszen of Bartlesville, OK. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, parents and infant brother, Orville Tieszen. Lake Andes Wave July 26, 2006
