Read More	Boone County Democrat November 6, 1913 Stanley Johnson, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Johnson, and one of the most highly respected young men of Garden township, died Sunday afternoon in the Methodist hospital in Des Moines after an illness of about two or three days duration. Death was due to diabetes. The first that was known of the presence of the disease was on last Friday morning when the young man complained of not feeling well, but considered his trouble only a slight indisposition which would pass away with the day. Learning the nature of the symptoms however, the parents were not satisfied until the advice of a physician was received, and the father asked permission to call Dr. Brown. The son objected to this saying that he would prefer calling at the physician’s office, and in compliance with his wishes he was immediately brought to Dr. Brown’s office in Madrid, where he was thoroughly examined. The father suggested that he be taken to the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, and the suggestion met with the approval of the physician. Stanley could hardly believe that this was necessary but finally consented to go. He reached the hospital in good spirits and fully believed that he would be able to return home in a day or two. The father and other members of the family remained as near his side as the rules of the hospital would permit. On Saturday he appeared as usual, but on Sunday a decline was noticeable and he continued to grow worse until death came. The remains were shipped to his home Tuesday evening. The funeral services are being held this afternoon in charge of Rev. R.A. Lewis, pastor of the Madrid Christian church. Services were held at the home at 1:00 o’clock and at 2:00 o’clock from the Christian church. Interment will be made in the Hillsdale cemetery. Stanley’s full name was Stanley Weeks Johnson. He was born in Garden township on April 7, 1897, and was 16 years, 6 months and 20 days of age at the time of his death. Besides his parents, who were unusually devoted to him, he leaves to mourn his untimely death, four brothers and four sisters, Alvy, Walter, Fred, Roy, Sarah, Florence, Pearl and Hattie. Four brothers and sisters have preceded him in death, three of them dying in infancy. While death is the one inalienable heritage of mankind, and enforces a ruthless claim regardless of age or worth, the grim message in this instance seems indeed untimely. Stanley is spoken of in the highest terms of praise by all who knew him. He was a young man of worth and character, with a life of usefulness before him and his death is indeed a sad one.
