Read More	Stanley William Schroeder was born August 5, 1920 at Postville, Iowa, the oldest of four sons born to Jessye A. Halvorson Schroeder and Ed F. Schroeder. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. He graduated from Postville High School in 1937. He passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2010, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville. He was 89 years old. Stan served in the U. S. Navy during World War II for three and one half years, most of it on the U. S. S. Quick, a destroyer. For more than two years, the destroyer and crew cruised the Atlantic searching for enemy submarines, coming in to port only for short periods. Stan was the "soundman," operating radar and sonar equipment. He served in several campaigns, including the invasion of North Africa, and was awarded the Bronze Star. His ship and crew captured the only documented submarine during the war, which is on display in the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. On September 1, 1944 Stan was married to Marjorie Mae Rekow at the Lutheran Service Men's Center in New York. They lived in Chicago for several years. They returned to Postville where they managed the family grocery store following the death of Stan's father. In the later years Stan was also employed in a clothing store in Monona and managed a grocery store in Stoddard, Wisconsin. Stan was known as the local historian and published a weekly column in the local newspaper featuring stories from the past. He also wrote several books, which remain unpublished, but were placed in the Postville Library. He had a weekly radio program on the local radio station, KPVL. Stan had a collection of historical pictures on glass plates and had them made into photos which were framed and placed in the Postville Library and the historical Turner Hall. Stan served two terms on the City Council, as well as on several town committees. He was President of the Historical Society and a charter member of the VFW and a member of the Arthur F. Brandt American Legion. He was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and had served two terms on the Church Council. Stan is preceded in death by his parents, his three brothers, the Reverend Duane Schroeder, Lyle Schroeder and Lyle's first wife, Juneil, and Gerald Schroeder. Surviving are his wife, Marjorie, two children, Sally (Ron) Rahde, North Liberty, IA, and Chance Schroeder, Iowa City, IA; four grandchildren, Travis (Faith) Blair, Joshua (Megan) Blair, Lucas Blair, and Cade Rahde; eight great grandchildren, Garett, Coy, and Micah Blair; Noah, Brady, and Olivia Blair; Dylan and Alexis Blair; and two sisters-in-law, Lois Schroeder Neisen, Woodruff, Wisconsin and Elizabeth Schroeder, Citrus Heights, CA. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, June 26, 2010, at 11:00 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Steve Brackett will officiate. Private Interment with be held at the Postville Cemetery in Postville, Iowa, with military rites. Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Postville, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
