The visitation was held March 17 in the evening at the Ruschmeier Funeral Home with funeral services held at 10:30 a.m. March 18, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Green City. Military services and burial will be March 19 (today) in the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center, Iowa. Stan was born April 11, 1921, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Willem and Hattie (Stuurop) Grotenhuis. On August 6, 1942, in Reno, Nev., he married Bernice Lausten. To this marriage four daughters were born. On December 20, 1997, in Hannibal, Mo., he married Lena Doran. Stan spent his early childhood in Iowa and S. Dak., later moving to Oakland, Cal. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U. SD. Army-Air Corp as a B-24 pilot. His missions were flying center wing of the B-wing in the South Pacific. Following the war, he started with the Bank of America in California, first as a messenger and later as a bank examiner. He continued this career in Sioux City until he had the urge to farm again in the Rock Valley – Sioux Center area. After two years in Lake Benton, Minn. as a banker again, he relocated to Epworth when he acquired Epworth Savings Bank. He also became involved with banks in Hopkinton (Monticello now) and New Vienna, Iowa; Biggsville, Marshall, and Casey, Ill.; and Green City, Mo. All along the way, he was involved with livestock and land. Stan was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church of Sioux Center, and more recently a member of the Green City United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Green City American Legion Post 365, American Legion Post 90 in Marshall, Ill., and a lifetime member of the VFW Post in New Vienna, Iowa. He was a past member of the Marshall Rotary Club, past director of the S.W.C.D., the Clark County Fair Board, and the Marshall Investment Club. Stan loved his family, his country, his animals, and the land. He will be remembered as a very honest and caring person with a great sense of humor. Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother; granddaughter, Rebecca Kumley; a sister, Audrey Jane Grotenhuis; and a brother, Henry Grotenhuis in infancy. *Dubuque Telegraph Herald March 18, 2014
