Sloan was 84 years old last week. She is an abstractor of title, having carried on her business for 45 years in the law office formerly used by Judge Robert Sloan, her father, and Hugh Sloan, her brother. "Miss Stell" is an energetic worker, although less than five feet tall. She is one of two living charter members of chapter I, P.E.O., organized in December of 1884. On her birthday, November 26, the chapter presented a gift, and also sent a gift to the other charter member, Mrs. Estelle Walker of New York City. Miss Sloan and her sister, Mrs. Io Therme, make their home with Mr. and Mrs. Joe Newbold and their daughter, Nancy. Mrs. Newbold is a niece of Mrs. Sloan. + + + + + Keosauqua. - Miss Stella Brown Sloan, 89, died at 10:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in Keosauqua after a lingering illness. The daughter of Robert and Mary Brown Sloan, she was born November 26, 1864, in Keosauqua. She was the eldest of seven children. In early years she worked in the abstract business of her father's law office, and after his death operated her own office. She later worked in the office of Newbold and McGrath until her retirement three years ago. She was a charter member of Chapter I, P.E.O., and a 50-year member of Lynds chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Io Therme, in whose home she lived, and Mrs. Mame Whitney of Grand Junction, Colo.; and a brother, Robert Sloan of Burlington. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. at the Congregational church. The Rev. Paul Jackson of Peterson, Iowa, will be assisted by the Rev. Folkert of Keosauqua.
