Jonas, pioneer Randolph citizen died in Clarkson hospital Omaha Tuesday morning at 8:30 from causes that date from January 27 of this year when he was terribly injured. Mr. Jonas was swept from the platform of a 30 foot windmill tower on which he and his son Walter were attempting to place a new mill head, when the hoisting mechanism slipped and swerved. Whether part of the mechanism fell on him is not definitely known, but his body was terribly crushed and broken. Examinations revealed that Mr. Jonas suffered a ruptured bladder, multiple fracture of the pelvis, a lower vertebrae of the spine was crushed, right hip broken, ligaments torn loose of right shoulder and three bones in the right foot broken. His life hung in the balance at that time, but by clear grit and determination he lived. After several weeks in a hospital Mr. Jonas came home, his body in a cast; he was about our streets in a wheel chair and later on crutches, but the injury to the bladder never healed. Operation after operation was undergone and on November 20 he was taken to Omaha where on last Friday the final operation of removal of the bladder was undertaken as a last resort. He came through the ordeal, but Sunday morning infection was discovered and in his weakened condition he had little strength to again make a winning fight for life. His son Gerald was at his bedside. Stephen T. Jonas was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Jonas and was born December 26, 1865, at Sheboygan, Wis. He grew to young manhood there and with his parents moved to a farm at St. Bernard, Neb., in 1877. They made their home there until 1893 when they moved to Randolph on the farm now known as the Fred Warner farm just east of Wareham. That was 41 years ago, and Mr. Jonas has lived in this vicinity and in town since then. On Aug. 27, 1909, he was united in marriage to Theresa Wingert. In 1912 Mr. Jonas formed a partnership with A. B. Helms in the well and pump business, which he later operated alone. Mr. Jonas has drilled many wells in this vicinity in the years that he and his sons have followed this business. Mr. Jonas was a devout Catholic, a man who went about his affairs in a quiet way, he loved his home and his family, and possessed an endurance in his eleven months of suffering that was truly remarkable. Deceased leaves his wife and four children; Gerald of Randolph, Stephen Jr. of Thurston, Marcella and Walter at home. He also leaves two brothers, Joseph of Randolph and Henry of Fairbury, and four sisters; Mrs. Lena Heitkemper of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Kate Burrows of Huron, S. D.; Mrs. Maggie Foxhoven of Winner, S. D.; and Mrs. Maude Bermel of Sioux City. Funeral services will be held this morning (Thursday) at St. Frances Catholic Church.
