Akes, mention of whose death was made in the last issue of this paper, on December 19, 1923, while engaged at drilling a well at Fort Robinson, Nebr. was afflicted with a paralytic stroke, and was taken to the Post hospital,where he remained until his death, which occurred on January 11, 1924. He was born near Davenport, Iowa, on February 12, 1851, being 72 years, 10 months and 30 days of age when he passed away. At the age of 12 years he went with his parents to Gentry County, Missouri, where he lived until August 22, 1868, the day he was united in marriage to Margaret V. Thompson, when he moved to New Hampton, Missouri, where he was engaged in the mercantile, undertaking and machinist business. From Misouri he moved to Dawes County, Nebraska, filing on a homestead near Crow Butte on May 8, 1884, and was engaged in the live stock and well drilling business. In 1900, he moved to Custer, S.D., where he conducted a saw mill and lumber camp and also drilled wells. During his residence at Custer, he invented an ice saw which is extensively used in the United States and England. At the death of his beloved wife, he sold his home and resided principally with his daughter Mrs. Mary Dippert, near Fort Robinson, Nebr. During which period he prospected for oil in and near Casper and Osage, Wyoming, becoming quite an expert Oil driller and never failed in numbering the feet to good water. He leaves to mourn his departure three brothers, Peter Akes, of Sedgewick, Colo.; Wm Akes of Pringle, S.D. Morgan Ponks, of McFall, Mo., and six daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Dippert of Crawford, Mrs. Minnie Nelson, of Belle Fourche, S. D.; Mrs. Carrie Matteson, of Dewey, S. D. ; Mrs. Mytle Jackson, of Custer, S. D.; Mrs Edith Green, of Wilder, Idaho and Mrs. Vienna Woodford, of Custer, S. Dak., also 33 grandchildren and seven great grand-children. Several years ago he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Crawford, Nebr., where funeral services were held on Sunday, conducted by Rev. E. C. Newland, and interment took place at the Crawford Cemetery.
