Colusa Daily Sun, Saturday, December 31, 1921 Colusa Pioneer Answers Call From Beyond Stephen Baker, Grand Island farmer and a pioneer resident of California since 1868, passed away at 6:30 o'clock this morning at the family home on the ranch about 12 miles south of Colusa after an illness of some duration. Death came peacefully in the presence of a number of relatives. Realizing that the end was approaching, the aged pioneer remarked to one of his daughters a few days ago that he would like to live at least three days more - until the dawn of the new year - but death is no respecter of wishes or desires. Stephen Baker, member of a family of 13 children, was born March 6, 1851, at Keytesville, Chariton county, Mo., and at the age of 13 left Missouri for the Pacific coast by ox team. The trip across the plains was an eventful one to the boy Stephen. One hundred and eighty wagons made up the ox train, averaging seven men to the wagon, all armed and ready for instant battle should Indians along the route become threatening. Coming to California the Baker family settled in the vicinity of Grand Island, where Stephen was married in 1875 to Mary Ann Meyers(sic-Myers), a native of the Dry Slough district. The long course of his life time Stephen Baker was a staunch democrat politically, and was generally known and respected for strength of his convictions. After his marriage he engaged in farming on his own account and was an extensive and successful grain grower of the Dry Slough section. Left to mourn the death of Stephen Baker are his wife, his aged mother, Mrs. Stacy Baker, a resident of Colusa; four brothers: Albert, Erwin, Samuel and Herbert, all of Colusa county; two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Boyd, Sacramento, and Mrs. Minnie Stackter of Lake county; five sons: Burris A. of Woodland, Stephen Bert, Grover Bernard, Thaddeus A., and Harry; two daughters, Mary Theresa Stephen and Mrs. J. E. Perry. With the exception of Burris, all the children resided in Colusa county. Deceased leaves six grand children. The funeral services will be held Monday morning from the Catholic church at 10 o'clock. Interment will be made in the Catholic cemetery in this city, under direction of Sullivan Bros.
