NORFOLK, Oct. 30—Stephen Barnaby Carney, postmaster in Norfolk during Roosevelt's administration, for many years chairman of the Republican committee for the second congressional district, and prominent trucker in Western Branch district in Norfolk county, died at 3:45 o'clock this morning at his home, Maple Shade, near Portsmouth. Mr. Carney had been in poor health about a year, but had been confined to his home only two weeks. He was 76 years old. Mr. Carney was at one time actively engaged in county affairs and was for twelve years chairman of the Norfolk county board of supervisors. During the activity of the Grange movement in the county many years ago Mr. Carney took an active part in its affairs, and at the time of his death was one of the two surviving charter members of the Churchland Grange, the venerable Mrs. J. M. Kingman, of Western Branch, being the other, and now the sole survivor of those who held the Grange charter at Churchland. Mr. Carney held the position of assistant postmaster in Norfolk during two terms prior to his appointment to the postmastership by Theodore Roosevelt, of whom he was a personal friend. At the expiration of his term in office, Mr. Carney retired to his home at Maple Shade, where he was engaged in farming during the remaining years of his life. He had been for many years an active and prominent member of the Churchland Baptist church and formerly was leader of the church choir, and took great interest in religious matters. He was an active member of the Churchland Masonic lodge. Mr. Carney was twice married, his second wife, who survives him, being Mrs. Helen Irene Dunaway Carney, daughter of the late Rev. Dr. A. B. Dunaway. His first wife was Martha Anne Wise. Mr. Carney leaves four children—P. W. Carney, Norfolk; S. B. Carney, Portsmouth; Mrs. Joseph B. Ives, Norfolk; and Mrs. A. J. Mapp, residing at Maple Shade. He also leaves two grandchildren, Norma G. and Stephen B. Carney, III. Funeral services will be held at the Churchland Baptist church tomorrow (Friday) at 3 p.m., with burial in the church cemetery.
