NOTABLE RICHMOND RIVER PIONEER. One of the Mid Richmond's notable old pioneers passed away on Sunday last, after two month's illness from senile debility, in the person of Mr. Stephen Newby, of Newby's Hill, Bungawalbin. Deceased, who was just on 87 years of age, had resided on the River since early manhood, and was accounted by his contemporaries one of the most remarkable of all the genuine pioneers of the district. It was in the 60's that he came here from the Manning River, and took up the extensive area of land at Bungawalbin that, he owned till his death. A man of indomitable pluck, courage and resource, he lost no time in converting what was really a swamp into one of the most fruitful farms In the district. He drained and improved the property, entered largely into cane growing on tho most suitable portions, and was among the first to demonstrate the possibilities of millet and lucerne and other profitable side lines. Owing to adverse seasons he had an uphill struggle for many years, but when dairying cattle into vogue he lost no time in entering into the new industry, and quickly made a success of the venture. In fact he was one of the first to put in milking machines, and to demonstrate what a profitable business butter was when intelligently handled. Taken all round he was one of tho most progressive of all our pioneers, as straight as the proverbial die, and one of the most unassuming of men withal. He rendered one great service to the district, a service that can never be readily forgotten he was the leader of the public spirited band that set out from the Mid Richmond to blaze tho first track between this and the Clarence Rivers. Mr. IT. Williams, of Swan Bay, was a member of that plucky party, and probably the sole surviving member today. How well the task was done is demonstrated by the fact that the road chosen half a century or more ago is still the road today, and no better, I shorter ov more satisfactory route exists. Only a few years ago Mr. Williams, in publicly referring to this matter, etc- clared that no better bushman ever lived than Mr. Newby. He could find his way anywhere, and his bush-craft was hover known to be at fault. Rowing was, perhaps, the deceased gentleman's most popular recreation and hobby, and it is a matter of history how he built a racing rigger in '74, carried it on his back to the Clarence, and there rowect against Mick Rush and Elias Laycock in j tho All Comers event at the Grafton ro- ? g'iittn, and put up a performance which, ? although it did not land him a winner, is still spoken of to this day in terms ? of admiration by the few surviving old , hands who witnessed that memorable j struggle. Mr. Newby lost his wife ; about 30 years ago, and a daughter a j day or so later,' a double bereavement from which he took years to recover. The deceased gentleman's funeral took place at Coraki yesterday and was very largely j attended. Rev. Rigby read the service, i and Mr. J. MeMullen had charge of the arrangements.
