Stephen Frederick, an old and highly respected citizen of this county died at the home of his son, Lem Frederick, at New Virginia, Iowa August 2, 1904. Mr. Frederick was born at Hillsbury, Washington county, Pennsylvania June 27th, 1827. He was 77 years, 1 month and 16 days of age. He was the oldest child of David and Elizabeth Frederick. He had three brothers and four sisters. When but a lad his parents immigrated from Pennsylvania to Licking county, Ohio, where they lived some years. When Stephen was a young man, the family came west settling in Fulton county, Illinois. Here, Mr. Frederick was married to Miss Anna Bowen, July 15th, 1855. To them were born five sons and one daughter. Theodore of Kalona, Iowa; Ervie, who died when 15 years of age; Leonard of New Virginia; Leander L. of Tobias, Nebraska; Henry C. of Osceola, Iowa; and Mrs. Lydia Holden of Woodburn, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Frederick came from Illinois to Johnson county, Iowa in the fall of 1860, where they lived until 1882, when the family came to Clarke county. Mrs. Frederick died in Johnson county, April 11, 1875. Mr. Frederick was married again to Almeda McMillan on February 1876. To this union were given seven children, three of whom died in infancy, and one daughter, Gertrude Bain, died May 25th, 1900. The three remaining children are Charles C.; Laura E.; and Harry L.; who with the first family of children mourn for a loving father. Brother Frederick was a good citizen, respected in every relation of life. He made a multitude of friends and kept them through life. His last illness was three months duration, of that terrible malady dropsy. His suffering was intense the greater part of the time, but he bore it all with resignation that was beautiful to see. The writer was called from Waterloo to preach his funeral, which was held at the Christian church in New Virginia in the presence of a vast audience filling the church and yard. After the services the sacred ashes were laid to rest in the Fremont cemetery. The afflicted family have the sympathy of an entire community in this hour of their sorrow. May God's blessing be theirs and may their lives of faithfulness be crowned with the reunion with their loved and lost, that is promised the children of God.
