Description	:	Stephen married Sarah Jane Cummings Deering on November 9, 1841. He was a farmer in Deering, Maine. From the July 29, 1873, edition of the Portland (Maine) Daily Express comes the following: "A Rye Field. Stephen Grant of Deering has five acres of rye that will beat the Dutch. One kernal produced 79 heads. It will average six feet and two inches high and he estimates that the field will yield 200 bushels of rye and four tons of straw. At the present price, it will take $490.00 to buy that yield." When he was about... Read More	Stephen married Sarah Jane Cummings Deering on November 9, 1841. He was a farmer in Deering, Maine. When he was about 66 years old, the following happened, as told from the April 12, 1880, edition of the Portland Daily Express: "Mr. Stephen Grant of Deering, having received an injury of the thumb of his right hand, took cold, and had an inflammation of the whole hand, extending up the arm, threatening the loss of his hand, if not his life, from blood poisoning. Dr. Buzzell of Deering having care of the case, amputated the thumb on Wednesday last, and is now encouraged to hope that there will be a favorable termination of the case, as the patient is more comfortable and the inflammation is fast subsiding." Apparently this didn't work, as two months later, on June 8, 1880, when the census was taken in Deering, Stephen stated that his arm was cut off. ####### Sources: ancestry.com, various historical newspapers, and records from Westbrook Historical Society.
