McMillan, Steve Gupton, George Rager and John Pendleton, while driving in a Ford car from north of Hunnewell toward Hannibal, were struck by Burlington passenger train No. 12, going east, and instantly killed, Tuesday morning about ten o'clock. The car belonged to and was driven by McMillan who lives 11 miles north of Hunnewell, Rager and Pendleton were neighbors of McMillian, while Gupton, who lives about four miles east of Leonard, was visiting his brother- in-law, Rager. The four men had started Tuesday morning for Hannibal. The trip it is said, was being made to take Rager there to consult a physician. There were no witnesses to the accident, with the exception of the train crew. It occurred at an open crossing, two miles southwest of Palmyra, on the prairie, with the view of the track unobstructed. The engineer of the train, who saw the approaching car, could not account for the accident, under these circumstances. He said that the car came nearly to a standstill before reaching the track, but then jumped ahead, just, in time to be struck. Evidently the gears were shifted into low, instead of the clutch being released. The car was wrecked and all four men killed almost instantly, but the bodies were not mangled. The train stopped as quickly as possible and the crew left four bridgemen, who were aboard, in charge of the bodies, while they proceeded to Palmyra and notified officials of the accident. The coroner was unable to go to the scene, but appointed Constable J. P. Hayden, who took a coroner's jury of six men to where the accident occurred. They however, did not return a verdict, as the crew of the train were not available at the time as witnesses. The inquest will probably be held at Palmyra today. When the train crew reached Hannibal, they notified railroad officials and these at once left for Palmyra to look over the situation. McMillan formerly lived southeast of Shelbina on the farm of his uncle, I. N. Wright, and is well known in Shelbina. Rager was a brother of Mrs. Mary Gosney of Shelbina, and has other relatives here. Shelbina Democrat, Shelbina, Missouri, 18 Jan 1922, Page 1, Column 7 FUNERAL SERVICES HELD FOR PALMYRA TRAGEDY VICTIMS Funeral services for Stephen Gupton, who met a tragic death at Mackey's crossing, near Palmyra, Tuesday morning of last week, were held last Thursday at 2 p.m. at Forest Grove church, conducted by Rev. F. M. Branic of Shelbyville. Interment was in Forest Grove cemetery. Mr. Gupton was buried on his 53rd birthday, he having been born in Sullivan county, Mo., January 19 (sic), 1869. The great part of his life had been spent in Shelby and Marion counties. For many years he had lived on his farm east of Leonard, where he was knwon as a successful farmer and stockman and a highly repsected citizen. His marriage to Miss Nannie Ragar of Macon county, who survives, took place February 28, 1894. To this union four children were born, three of whom are living, Paul, Oneita and Ernest. One child died in infancy. Two brothers, M. T. Gupton of Clarence, and Buchanan Gupton of near Leonard, and one sister, Mrs. Emily Panchot o Hannibal, also survive. Soon after their marriage Mr. Gupton and his wife united with the Disciples church at Berea. Mr. Gupton was also an active member of the Kirby I.O.O.F. lodge. Last Tuesday morning Mr. Gupton, together with a brother-in-law, Geo. Ragar of near Warren, and two of the latter's neighbors, A. A. McMillen and John Pendleton, while on their way to Hannibal in an automobile, were struck by a Burlington passenger train at a crossing two miles west of PAlmyra and all four were instantly killed. A double funeral was held at Andrew Chapel Thursday morning for Pendleton and Ragar, conducted by Rev. R. L. Wilson of Monroe City. Funeral services for Mr. McMillen were held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at the Hunnewell Christian church, conducted by Rev. J. L. Shoemaker of Novelty. Mr. Pendleton who was 63 years old, came to Marion county from Virginia January 27, 1921, and made his home on a farm near Warren. He leaves a wife and seven daughters. Mr. Ragar was born near Belltown 64 years ago and had always lived in Marion county. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Chas. Burditt. Mr. McMillen was a native of Illinois and waas 52 years old. He came to Hunnewell about nine years ago and engaged in the grocery business and later formed a partnership with Leach & Guinan, but sold out and moved to a farm near Lakenan. About two years ago he formed a partnership with W. B. Davis and moved to the latter's farm near Andrew Chapel. He was a member of the Lakenan Christian church, the M. W. A. and Maconic fraternities. Burial services were under auspices of the Masonic Order and Woodmen acted as pall-bearers. He leaves a wife, one adopted daughter and one brother.
