Stephen was married to Mary Long on September 30, 1838 in Canton, Fulton Co., Illinois. Mary was born on April 12, 1819 in Lawrence County, Ohio or Charleston, Virginia (now W. Stephen was married to Mary Long on September 30, 1838 in Canton, Fulton Co., Illinois. Mary was born on April 12, 1819 in Lawrence County, Ohio or Charleston, Virginia (now W. Virginia), the daughter of Gabriel Long and Sarah (Whitten) Long. Stephen and Mary had 13 children, twelve reaching adulthood. They are: 1. Martha Mary Hand, born October 20, 1839 in Illinois; married Henry Clay Hunt on June 18, 1859; Martha died on April 28, 1914; This couple is buried in the Pataha Flat Cemetery. 2. Cyrenus "Cyrus" Hand, born May 20, 1841 (FindAGrave #27356070; served in Co. B & C of the 47 Illinois during the Civil War; Cyrenus died on September 15, 1899 in Pomeroy, Garfield Co., Washington; the East Washingtonian, a weekly newspaper published at Pomeroy published the following notice in their Sept. 30, 1899 edition; "Died; Cyrenus Hand, brother of Stephen Hand (deceased)...served in the Union army in the Civil War.....; There is a statue of a Civil War Veteran on the lawn of the Garfield County Courthouse. On the base are listed names of those who later lived in Garfield and formed a chapter of the GAR. Cyrenus Hand is one of the names on the base of the statue.; Cyrenus' earthly remains were laid to rest in the Pataha Flats Cemetery, Garfield Co., Washington. 3. Harvey Hand, born February 18, 1843 in Breeds, Fulton County, Illinois; died May 18, 1884 or on September 20, 1888 in either Warren County, Iowa or in Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa. 4. John Hand, born in 1845, probably on January 9, 1845, probably in Peoria County, Illinois (FindAGrave #27356158); John Hand married Mary Eliza Manning (FindAGrave #27356135) on October 10, 1880 in Baxter Co., Missouri; John died on May 29, 1914, Pataha, Garfield Co., Washington; buried in Pataha Flats Cemetery, Garfield Co., Washington. 5. Charles Hand, born July 16, 1847 (FindAGrave #27356058); died on July 24, 1926, Pataha, Garfield Co., Washington; never married; buried in the Pataha Flats Cemetery, Garfield Co., Washington. 6. Frances Elizabeth Hand, born __________ __, 1848 in Illinois; married to James Milner; Frances died on ___________ __, 1___ (c. 1924-26) in Seattle, King County, Washington. 7. Margaret Rebecca Hand, born June 30, 1856 (FindAGrave #38957193), possibly in Canton, Fulton County, Illinois; Rebecca died on August 17, 1916 in Pomeroy, Garfield Co., Washington. 10. Nancy Belle Hand (FindAGrave #81665061), born September 20, 1858; married to Dudley J. Spencer, on July 04, 1878 in Butler, Missouri. 7 children born to this union. 11. Stephen R. Hand, born March 1, 1861 in Illinois (FindAGrave #27356086); died between January 1 & 7, 1899 in Garfield Co., Washington; Believed to have never married; obit from East Washingtonian edition on Jan. 7, 1899; "Obituary: Mr. Stephen Hand died very suddenly last Sunday....Mr. Hand was the youngest of five brothers. He was also a brother to Mrs. Dr. Dennison and Mrs. J.O. Long. He leaves an aged mother, with whom he made his home.." 12. James Hand, born __________ __, 18__ (c. 1861 to 1865); died before the fall of 1865 in Fulton County, Illinois. 13. Jane Clarissa "Jennie" Hand, born March 22, 1865 in Pleasanton, Linn County, Kansas; Jennie died on February 3, 1924 in Walla Walla, Washington; Jennie married James Smith Dennison on 17 Dec 1886. Sometime during the Civil War, sometime between 1861 and 1865, Stephen and Mary moved their family west, where they settled in or near Pleasanton, Kansas in Linn County. Their last child, Jane Clarissa, was born there in March of 1865. In the 1880 census, Stephen and Mary are found in Potosi Township in Linn County, Kansas still residing near Pleasanton with their children, John, Charles, Stephen, and Clarissa. Living next door was son Michael, with his wife and daughter. According to family legend, in 1880, Stephen and Mary moved still further west Washington Territory, where they joined Mary's brother, Ransom Long, and his family in Garfield County. Stephen Hand died on July 22, 1887 in Pomeroy, Garfield Co., Washington. He is buried in the Pataha Flats Cemetery, Garfield Co., Washington. The July 30, 1887 edition of the East Washingtonian, a weekly newspaper published at Pomeroy, Washington, published the following notice: "Mr. Stephen hand, an old settler in this county died on the 22nd, aged 73 years." Stephen's earthly remains were laid to rest in the Pataha Flats Cemetery in Garfield County, Washington. Mary apparently continued to reside in or near Pomeroy, Washington where she died on June 12, 1908 in Pomeroy, Garfield Co., Washington. Obituaries for Mary (Long) Hand that were published in the East Washingtonian: June 13, 1908 Died--Mrs. Mary Hand, Thursday, age 89 years, two months....born in Virginia, and came to this county with her husband twenty four years ago... children; Mrs. W.O. Long, Mrs. M. Hunt, Mrs. Mary Potter, and Mrs. J.S. Dennison, also John, Charles, and Michael Hand, all of Garfield county; Mrs. M.D. Spencer of Hume, MO., and Mrs. Elizabeth Milner of LaHarpe, Kansas.... July 18, 1908 Died...Miss Mary Long, born April 12, 1819 in West Virginia, near Charleston, and died June 12, 1908. She and Stephan Hand were married Sept. 30, 1838 near Canton, Illinois, where they resided until after seven sons and six daughters were born to them. Twelve reached maturity...Baptist...in the fall of 1865 they, with eleven children journeyed to Pleasanton, Linn County, Kansas...July 10, 1884, they, with six of their children, headed west, hoping to improve the health of the husband, who had been an invalid for more than ten years. Their son John had preceeded them west by three months....arrived at her brother's, Ransom Long, October 20, 1884. The husband died in July, 1887. Two sons, Harvey and James died in Illinois, and two sons, Cyrus and Stephen, died in 1899, at the present home. Three sons, John, Michael, and Charles of Pataha Flat, six daughters, Mrs. Martha Hunt, and Mrs. Rebecca Long of Pomeroy, WA., Mrs. Jennie Dennison of Pataha, Mrs. Mary Potter of Oklahoma, Mrs. Elizabeth Milner, and Mrs. Nancy Spencer of Kansas. Sixtyone grandchildren, fiftythree great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.." Mary (Long) Hand's earthly remains were also laid beside those of her husband of 48 years, Stephen Hand, in the Pataha Flats Cemetery.
