| Description | : | Stephen was born to Stephen Crofford, Sr (1791-1867) and Rebecca Carpenter Crofford (1796-1844). He married Daphne E Merritt (1830-1862) and had six children. By the end of the Civil War his wife and four children had died. He remarried a few months after discharge to Maria Moore born 1835. From this union three sons were born Norman, Stephen C and Paul S.
