He was born March 15, 1939, in Lynn, Mass. He was the son of Edward Joseph and Marion (Hanson) McCarthy. He attended Fesseden School for Boys in Wellesley Hills, Mass., moved to Oelwein in 1951, and graduated from Oelwein High School in 1958. He attended Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa State University, Ames, and graduated from Parsons College in Fairfield with a B.A. degree in 1962. He then attended the University of Arizona, Tucson, University of Iowa, Iowa City, and Drake University, Des Moines, receiving an M.A. degree in history in 1972. On June 27, 1964, he married Jacquelyn Dotson at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ames. Mr. McCarthy taught for 21 years in the Iowa City Community School District (1962-1983) and was co-owner of Topiary World Limited from 1985 to 1990. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sons of the American Legion, a lifetime member since 1975 of Antique Automobile Club of America, Cedar Rapids Region Antique Automobile Club of America, Iowa Valley Region Antique Automobile Club of America, founded the Northeast Iowa Region Antique Automobile Club of America in 1985, and established the Oelwein Invitational Antique Car Show in 1984. He was a past member of the Coralville City Council (1971-72), National Education Association, Iowa City Education Association, Iowa State Education Association (1962-1983) and was deeply involved in the Johnson County Historical Society. He is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial fund has been established.
