Description	:	Stephen Richards was the son of Robert Richards of NB Canada and Fanny Hickey. His mother was the daughter of a loyalist who had gone to New Brunswick from Machias, Washington County, Maine. Stephen immigrated to Washington County Maine with his family as a young child in 1836 and grew up in Whiting, Washington County, Maine where he was naturalized in 1856. Read More	Stephen Richards was the son of Robert Richards of NB Canada and Fanny Hickey. His mother was the daughter of a loyalist who had gone to New Brunswick from Machias, Washington County, Maine. Stephen immigrated to Washington County Maine with his family as a young child in 1836 and grew up in Whiting, Washington County, Maine where he was naturalized in 1856. He married Elizabeth Stanhope July 28, 1851 (alternate date 1848) and commenced raising a family. In 1850 Stephen and Elizabeth were living with her parents Rodolphus and Susannah Stanhope and family and Stephen was working on the farm. By 1860 he had his own farm and four children with another daughter born later in that year. His wife was pregnant with their last child when Stephen was drafted into service in the Civil War. The quota for Whiting was six men, reset at 12 when he was called up for duty. Ironically the draft was conducted next door at the home of James Crosby who would serve and die with Stephen. They were members of the 28th Maine Infantry and was mustered out in October of 1862. Stephen was sent to New Orleans arriving at the end of November, 1862. His unit left New Orleans for Florida and was then reassigned back to Port Hudson, Louisiana in 1863. The regiment participated in the advances of June 14 and again on the 20th through the 22nd. Stephen, along with one brother-in-law, Christopher Stanhope, and his neighbor James Crosby, were killed together on June 22, 1863 at Port Hudson. In addition to the three killed, nine more were wounded. According to his military record, at the time they were in a company of men who were sick and unfit for combat duty and their job was to act as skirmishes to draw enemy fire. According to the History of Whiting they were eating at the mess tent when they were hit by a single canon shot, killing all three Whiting neighbors. Stephen left a widow with six young children, the youngest of which, his namesake, had been born a few months prior to Stephen's death. His estate was settled after the war, reaching Probate by June of 1870. FindaGrave contributor Larry Burden 49233116 suggests "Stephen Richards most certainly lies in an unmarked grave at Port Hudson National Cemetery along with the two friends noted. According to the Port Hudson cemetery narrative "Nearly 4,000 Union troops were killed and almost all were buried in the cemetery; only 600 were known."
