He was born in New York May 16, 1840, and lived there until he was 14 years old when he moved to Michigan with his parents until manhood. He enlisted in the Civil War, Co. C, 1st Regiment Michigan Light Artillery on Nov 25, 1861, and was honorably discharged June 22, 1865 at Detroit, Mi. He was married in 1870 To Mary J. He was born in New York May 16, 1840, and lived there until he was 14 years old when he moved to Michigan with his parents until manhood. He enlisted in the Civil War, Co. C, 1st Regiment Michigan Light Artillery on Nov 25, 1861, and was honorably discharged June 22, 1865 at Detroit, Mi. He was married in 1870 To Mary J. Comstock of Nicholville, Mi., and came to Ida County, Iowa, in March 1973 living here until the time of his death. To this union were born 13 children, Walter Percival who died in infancy; Coral Percival Bennett, deceased; Maud Koppenhaver, Garrison, N.D.; Blanch Carter of Sioux City; Merton, Floyd, Anna, Hattie, Amos, Florence, Ethel, and Edith of Ida Grove, and Asa (deceased). In 1867, he joined the Sprague Lodge I00F at Decatur, Mi., and in which he retained his membership until the time of his death. Since 1891, he has been janitor of the courthouse. ---------------- Steve was born in the Empire State and rustled among the pebbles on a farm until 1860, when he moved to Michigan and in 1861 enlisted in Battery C., 1st Michigan volunteers, in which he served four years and six months. He came to Ida County in 1872 and therefore is a pioneer of Ida County. He farmed it for a great many years, but following the plow was a little hard for him and he moved to Ida Grove in 1882 and was appointed janitor at the courthouse by the board of supervisors five or six years ago.
