Description	:	by Edith Ruth Ann Foreman, daughter. Stephen "Steve" Berndt was born November 19, 1911, to William Clark Wheeler Brandt and Sussaner Vinzant in a log cabin. The cabin was known then as the John Wesley Vinzant place and was located across the road from the Mineral Springs which was five miles northwest of Mercer. He was the third of ten children; one died in infancy (Paul Berndt) and is buried in the McKinney Cemetery. She was the daughter of Squire Batton Ragan and Rose Bloom. Flora died September 18, 1941 in childbirth. She delivered a son, Stephen Dan Berndt, of Mercer. Steven was inducted into the Army during WW II on his mother's birthday, November 11, 1942. He was discharged on July 15, 1943, in Yuma, AZ. He married second Edith Velma Retherford on may 9, 1944 in South Lineville by Rev. Roy Donelson. She was the daughter of William and Gertrude (Kuehn) Retherford of Cambridge, NE. They had three children: Edith Ruth Ann (Charles Wayne) Foreman; Wayne Andrew Berndt; and Lois Eirene (Jerry Lee) Greiner. They had one grandchild, Heath Edward Foreman. Steve worked on the Rock Island Railroad, then transferred in March 1947 to the CB&Q. Here he worked for 27 years. He had 30 years with the railroads. He retired in 1974. Steve was an ordained Baptist minister. He served the Mercer Baptist Church and various churches in IA. Steve died August 13, 1994 and Edith died May 6, 1996; they are buried in Batavia, IA. ---
