Ward of Crisfield, who had won national acclaim as an outstanding wildlife carver, died early Monday of this week in the Veterans Hospital in Wastington, D.C. where he had been a patient for several weeks. He had been ill with leukemia since December of last year. He was 81 years of age. Born in Crisfield he was a son of the late Travis and Laura Sparrow Ward. He had made his home with his niece, Mrs. Ida Linton. Steve and his brother Lem, now 83, had worked as a team all their lives in wildfowl carving, starting as early as 1918 carving decoys as a help in their own duck hunting. They soon became proficient and developed a realistic style of carving that became much in demand by other hunters. It has now been called the "Crisfield style" and depicts ducks and geese in all their natural postures and forms. They progressed into more elaborate carving and in 1948 Lem was American National Champion. Steve carved the birds and Lem painted them. The brothers were awarded honorary degrees of LITT.D. (Doctor of Letters) by Salisbury State College in 1974 for their high artistry. In April of 1975 they received recognition locally when Mayor John S. Catlin proclaimed "Lem and Steve Ward Week" and presented them with certificates of appreciation for their lifelong work in wildfowl carving. The Ward Foundation, which is based in Salisbury, was founded about nine years ago to promote the folk art of wildfowl carving, and was named in their honor. Mr. Ward was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church here; an honorary member of the Crisfield Kiwanis Club; a World War I Army veteran and member of Crisfield's VFW Post and Stanley Cochrane American Legion Post. He loved barbershop harmony and sang with the Crisfield Chapter of S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. when it was active. Surviving, in addition to his brother and his neice, are a sister, Mrs. Nancy Revelle, Crisfield, and several nephews. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in Asbury United Methodist Church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Nelson Benjamin. Burial was in the American Legion Cemetery here.
