Emmet - Sterling E Henderson, 92 of Emmet, died Friday, April 22, 2016 at the Norfolk Veterans Home. Burial will be in the O'Neill Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the O'Neill American Legion Simonson Post 93." "Sterling was born on March 16, 1924 in Emerson. He joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on May 17, 1943. He served during World War II in both the Pacific and European Theaters. Sterling served under General Patton building... Sterling served under General Patton building bridges for the troops across the Rhine River as an engineer. he was in charge of German prisoners of war after the bomb was dropped on Japan until he was honorably discharged in 1946. Sterling married Dorothy Mae Severson on Aug. 10, 1946 in Hiawatha, KS." To this union a daughter and a son were born. "Sterling and Dorothy divorced in 1958. He married Doris Pheleps in Brazil, IN in May 1959, then divorced in Feb. 1960. In 1976 he married Mildred Hattig. They divorced in 1978. In May 1979, he married Betty Jean Custer. They were married until her death on Sept. 24, 1993. Sterling lived out his later years in the Norfolk Veterans Home and liked to watch old westerns. As he became holder, his eyesight failed, so he enjoyed listening to western books on audio. He enjoyed conversing with the nursing staff and always had candy for his favorite nurses. He will be remembered as one of a kind." He was survived by 1 daughter and 1 grandson. "He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Betty Jean Henderson; one brother Harley Henderson; and one son Elliot Henderson."
